American Government Clep Study materials?! - baarsc - 04-27-2010

I am about to take a long road trip and want to study for my upcoming American Government Clep test. However, I am having difficulty finding study materials to bring with me. I have found many online resources, but are there any books or printable study materials available out there?

Thanks in advance!

There are a lot more threads out there: Just perform a search of the forum.

The Specific Exam Feedback Forum Thread is also excellent, though you have to be a paying member of IC to access it: http://www.degreeforum.net/specific-exam-feedback-instantcert-subscribers-only/1522-american-government-clep.html

Hope your studies go well!

Hi!

(I don't know if you saw this in the other thread so I will post it here.)

I would suggest the books by REA and/or Cliff's Notes.

You can read my feedback here (scroll down past the history exams):

Have a great trip and best wishes on your exam!

The Cliff's Notes is the only study material I used and I did well.

Cliffs Notes were my main source for Am Govt, and I did fine. Better yet, Cliffs Notes are available as PDF downloads for about $10, if I remember correctly. No DRM nonsense, either, so you can view them with good ole Acrobat Reader.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am extremely nervous to take this exam. Everything I've read online of others who have have taken it said it was really hard. I bought the official CLEP study guide for this exam and it seems like the questions in the practice exam are so specific and detailed.

Any tips as to what to expect? I need to pass this test so I can graduate on time. The only other test I could take is the Principles of Management exam.

Principles of Management was the first CLEP I took just to see what a CLEP was like. I didn't do any studying at all and showed up to take it and passed.

Having been a member of instantcert for a few months now and owing ALL of my success on one of the hardest CLEPs to this forum, I feel it is necessary to share my strategies with the newbies. First of all, I was scared to death to take the AG CLEP. Everywhere I turned people were telling about how hard it was. Although I used a million different sources, the ones that benefitted me the most were the AP Government and Politics book, a list of the major terms and court cases that I found here, Standard Deviants video on American Gov't, and a course I found on iTunes (PLS 101 with Dr. Scott from Missouri) that was free and VERY helpful in creating a big picture. If you have time, watch the videos and take notes. If you are pressed for time, read the AP book all the way through and if you understand it you're good to go. EVERYTHING on the test is in that book. It is not as hard as people say if you understand the major concepts.
Make sure you know:
-Supreme court cases (not all of them - maybe like the 10 most important. They're posted here somewhere in italics, you just have to find them)
-All of the amendments, with emphasis on the Bill of Rights (it does not go into much depth about them. Just know them and you should be fine)
-Powers of the Pres, House of Reps, Senate, Governor, Supreme Court

Basically, It's too much for me to write (sorry). So, I'm attaching what I used to study. It's fairly lengthy but it should cut down your research time in half. I've gathered all of the comments posted here into one document and added other stuff I found online too. Also, the info I mentioned above that were in italics are in this document. What the heck - I have the Peterson's and CLEP practice tests too (although they're too big to upload here). They helped TREMENDOUSLY. Good luck. Any more questions or comments I'd be happy to answer at Qtpie2evil@yahoo.com

One last thing, I didn't use instantcert at all. I was pressed for time and didn't always have my laptop - I needed something in my hands to read. Plus, going through those hundreds of questions was daunting. I don't discourage it if you have time, but you don't have to have it to pass.
