What is FEMA credit? - Journeyk9 - 12-30-2009 I keep reading about FEMA credit being offered. What it is it exactly? How do I get it? How does it count towards my degree? Thanks for any information on this! As you guys have my curiousity! What is FEMA credit? - rickyjo - 12-30-2009 It really depends where you want to go to college. If you are already enrolled somewhere and are loyal it may not be useful to you. Thomas Edison State College takes up to 28 credits worth (give or take, call for the exact number--it is slightly under 30) as do a handful of others. The website is here: CEUs and College Credits table Note the college credits table is for Fredricks Community College, TESC and others vary in credit given. You pay a fee to have Fredricks transcribe the credit or can credit bank at TESC and a few other methods but one must be very careful the plan will work before spending money. Just because a regionally accredited college took the credit doesn't mean it will transfer like one could hope. Some schools take credit raw, a few will require fredrick or another to take it first. It's a bizarre system, one must be very careful and go to the right schools. Red rocks community college in Denver will take about 30 also and you only have to take one class and they will add it to their regionally accredited transcript for $15 a credit. I will warn you that the one class could be expensive if you are out of state and transferability is still a question. It seems people who go to TESC have had the best luck with the credit but I guess it's a bit pricey to have it transferred in. TMW or somebody said something along the lines of $60 per credit? I have not verified this. What is FEMA credit? - TMW2010 - 12-30-2009 rickyjo Wrote:. TMW or somebody said something along the lines of $60 per credit? I have not verified this. I think I misunderstood what the TESC Calculator was saying when I said this. I went back and looked at it today, and it looks like if you transfer the credits in at the time of enrollment, you're not charged, but if you get the credit after you're enrolled for the degree, it looks like they charge $83/credit for 'Testing' credits and $160/credit for 'Prior Learning Assessment' credits. Under the Testing explanation they only mention TECEPs (which look to be a thing of the past as of the new year,) and the PLA credits talk about 'students earn college credits for college-level knowledge acquired from work experience, independent reading, training programs, volunteer work, or other sources outside a traditional college classroom. ' Yeah, looking back on it, it looks like I miscalculated the cost of TESC, and dismissed them for the wrong reasons.. 2.5k institution costs is a lot nicer than the $13k costs I'd initially figured out on the calcuator back in Oct. Wacky... Ah well, I'm happy with EC so far. Silly note - Funny thing is with TESC's calcuator, if you transfer 50 credits in for a Bachelors degree, and then complete 1 credit a year for the remaining 70 credits while enrolled, your cost for your degree is only $160,472. What is FEMA credit? - rickyjo - 12-30-2009 Now that is great news! I'm so happy because when you said it what that would cost I thought I had made a serious oversight. Cost is my #1 issue as I've stated in the past, but not quite enough that I would abandon credit and do it all over again. Thanks for the update. What is FEMA credit? - annegirl - 12-30-2009 If I've misunderstood what you're saying I apologize in advance... TESC doesn't charge you extra to transfer credit in after you've enrolled in a degree. I transferred in multiple CLEPs DSSTs and FEMAs after enrolling and I wasn't charged for any of them. TESC does not charge for FEMA credit. They take up to 25 FEMAs. If you are going for an Emergency Management degree they will accept up to 15 in your area of study. TMW2010 Wrote:I think I misunderstood what the TESC Calculator was saying when I said this. Yeah, apparently my imagination went wild while looking at the TESC Calculator when I first looked into them... Ah well... What is FEMA credit? - Journeyk9 - 12-31-2009 How will this apply to my degree? Which fema classes do I take, so that the credit applies to my BS BA degree? I aplogize that I am still lacking in my understanding of how this works. I appreciate the great support that you guys give. What is FEMA credit? - rickyjo - 12-31-2009 I'm not a TESC student so others may correct any misconceptions I may have but I believe that usually they count as electives unless you are specifically going for an emergency management or strongly related degree. There are a few NFA courses that work essentially the same way that can be used toward more fields of study. They are also ACE approved (two of them) and can be used towards a degree at more schools. I do not have the course numbers on hand, somebody will fill in the blanks or I will post it later. The link for those guys is here: U.S. Fire Administration for NFA Students & Instructors What is FEMA credit? - bricabrac - 01-01-2010 Journeyk9 Wrote:I keep reading about FEMA credit being offered. Hello Journeyk9, Here is some info I put together for one of my TESC classmates. I'm not sure which school you are enrolled at so you would need to call your advisor to find out exactly which courses they will accept. Also you can only choose courses that are listed as college credit. But atleast this will give you an idea of how it works. _______________________________ I started with the professional development series. They are geared toward managers and are very good for any business major. There are seven now available to take online. They are only 25 questions each and super easy. http://training.fema.gov/IS/searchIS.asp?keywords=PDS Here is the main course list online. http://training.fema.gov/IS/crslist.asp Take note of the important notices and quick help guide boxes to the right. There you will find answers to any question you could possible have. Okay so to get started: What you want to do is when you click on the hyperlink of a course. You will see two buttons one to download materials and the other is the final exam button. Some even have another button for test questions. The questions are always included at the back of the course material section. Many have the option of either a word or pdf document. Print out the test section from the document. Check of your answers A B C D E on the paper copy. When complete you go back into the course link. Click the button to take the exam. You are now at a page with the answer sheet and a section below to fill in your personal information. After entering your answers fill in your information and click the submit button. In a day you will receive an email from EMI to congratulate you on passing and it will have the link to your certificate. Note it took 24hrs only for the first three-four exams, after I would get the emails almost instantly to within 15mins. Repeat this for each course. Once all are done you fill out the transcript form and fax or mail to EMI. This is also free of charge. TESC accepts transcripts from EMI\FEMA. They will send a transcript to TESC and you will also receive a copy. TESC takes about 5 weeks from receipt of the transcript to process and apply it to your official transcript. Itâs a very easy process and you will be finished fast. Even if you do only three a week, by the time you finish the semester your free electives could be completed. Good luck! What is FEMA credit? - annegirl - 01-01-2010 Attached you will find the list of FEMAs that TESC accepts. There are some courses that are not offered any more, but I believe last time I checked there were enough courses to get you to the magic 25 that they accept. This list was given to me Summer 2009 and is the most current list to my knowledge. Look at this post for NFA credits. You might also try searching the IC forum for other FEMA threads. There are quite a few around that will answer your questions. One other thing, if you take a FEMA test and you don't pass it be sure to delete your cookies before retaking it or they will not submit your score. I've done this too many times to count and it gets annoying! |
