In a few days in a undisclosed location I will be having lunch with Admiral Mullens. He is a 4 star admiral, and I am seaman hah. I plan on asking him for a letter of recommendation to go officer. All of my higher ups suggested I ask. (E-7, E-6, 0-5, E-9). Anyone have any good ideas to help me ask for it? He is the highest ranking person in the Navy, and I do not wish to be rude.

I have involved in setting these up and selecting members to be at these luncheons/photo ops/dinners. Usually you'll have the opportunity to ask a question or two during the lunch...sometimes prompted...but getting one on one face-time may, or may not, be a possibility. You are going to have to be on the lookout for your chance...that or ask for a moment with the Admiral from one of his aides. Keep in mind that about every minute of the Admiral's visit will be on a tight schedule and is usually directed by the base's Public Affairs office.
Next, you need to put together a 15-30 second commercial about yourself, much the same as though you were job hunting and had only a few seconds with someone in the hiring chain to sell yourself. Include all of your military accomplishments, awards, distinguishing moments like doing well on training or volunteer events you led or took part in; end it with you asking for his recommendation to the officer academy.
You want to look exceptionally sharp in both your appearance and speech. Be clear, concise, personable, professional and make sure whatever you wish to ask or talk about is practiced and polished.
The Admiral is just a person so don't be nervous around him, the worst that can happen is he says no and you haven't lost anything. This is a rare window of opportunity so insure you are prepared and confident. Good Luck!

Haha thanks everyone! Nice support and some great advice. As we speak I am working on my 20second Info Commcercial I am going to say to him
Haha at them turning me down for OCS. I havent done anything bad either, in highschool 3.5GPA, and currently in college 3.6. So not to bad..
I shall impress him with my paper thing cammies after I iron them for another 2 hours
Oh I forgot to say, I am sitting right next to him. His right side (good arm) haha

Have you thought about putting together a dossier on yourself and handing it to him as well? Seeing as your sitting right next to him it seems as though you have your "in". Keep in mind that he will be meeting many troops during his visit, a visual couldn't do anything but help him remember who you are and what you requested. Just a thought and be sure to let us know how it went!

Well I got DENIED as I thought. Heres a play by play
We had a meeting about 12 of us, all E-6, E-7's then theres lonely E-3 me.
He gets up leaves next door, I follow. I ask his security for a second alone, he told me to talk to the captain (O-6) I asked him he told me go ahead, then there was an O-5 in army, she let me go. Then as I walk up he trys to pose for a picture I tell him its strictly business and ask for the letter. He tells me absolutely not, and that he has to know the person first. I asked him if he had a minute lol. Then he left into the sunset... probably wondering who that cocky ass E-3 was.

I'm not gonna lie, that took balls. I don't know if I would have done it. +100 cool points.
