How hard are each of the following CLEP/DANTES, and what class to they usually sub? - mistae - 09-29-2009

How hard are each of the following CLEP/DANTES, and what class to they usually substitute (for the non-obvious)?

Humanities CLEP
College Math CLEP
Natural Sciences CLEP
Social Sciences and History CLEP
Accounting CLEP

History of Viet Nam Dantes
Here's to You're Health Dantes
Civil War and Reconstruction Dantes

Also, which would substitute for English 120, Freshman Comp or English Comp? What would the other sub for?

Thanks!

What school? What degree? TESC has a list of what test sub for what classes in their catalog.

The ease of each test depends on you and your strengths. I found Hist. of Vietnam war fairly easy, but then I lived through those years and protested the war. I had a hard time with A & I Lit., but then I am a scientist and over analyze everything.

I would say college math was hard for me because it was the first clep I had taken in three years. Social Sciences in history is easy if you like historical subjects and humanities if you like reading. By and large easy is probably social science and history.

Verify the English Comp or Freshman comp with an advisor at the particular school before taking, as mention in the earlier post. Thomas Edison was English Comp with Essay Jan 2009

If you have any background in history, Social Sciences and History is probably the easiest (just brush up on basic Sociology). Humanities isn't very difficult, but it requires a lot of prep on account of the width of subjects covered. College Math is easy if you like math. I like math well enough to tolerate College Algebra and College Math with a genuine equanimity. I'd say a week of prep for College Math is enough if you already know some algebra.

Whichever you choose, go get it! Big Grin

  • Humanities CLEP
  • College Math CLEP
  • Natural Sciences CLEP
  • Social Sciences and History CLEP
All these sub for 2-course chunks of freshman-level credit: 100-level, and specific course titles vary. In other words a school that grants credit for the Nat Sci CLEP might offer science classes for non-science majors, as Bio 105, Botany 107, Physical Science 110, etc. These tend to be broad but not real deep. I passed Nat Science mostly on a lifetime of nerdy reading. Humanities: Art, Lit, Music rolled up together -- all the public TV topics (and I mean that in the best possible way).
  • Accounting CLEP
Excelsior gave me credit for this for my business degree. Their comparable course is "Accounting 211". 200-level, as in second-year. Its content corresponds to "Accounting I" and other similar classes taught at numerous colleges. The basics. College Board once had -- and word is they are bringing back -- a 6-credit exam that also covers "Accounting II". If you think you're going to need it, perhaps wait and see.
  • History of Viet Nam Dantes
History/Social Science. 300-level; i.e., junior-year, so not the first history class you take, unless you come in with prior knowledge. How it fits into your degree depends on your school and major.
  • Here's to You're Health Dantes
A lot of schools offer (and some require) a basic health class. Here's a way to test out, so you don't even have to get up and come to class Smile
  • Civil War and Reconstruction Dantes
History. 300-level; i.e., junior-year, so not the first history class you take, again unless you are a Civil War buff, and like the Viet Nam test, how it fits into your degree depends on your school and major. Some say this one is pretty challenging. Hard is relative.
  • Also, which would substitute for English 120, Freshman Comp or English Comp? What would the other sub for?
This may depend on your school. English 120 at my school included writing term papers, and so no CLEP truly subs for it, if that's what the school wants you to learn.
