Lecture Help! - AirMedic - 09-12-2009 Hi All, I am doing a 70 minute lecture for a major industry expo (6,000+ attendees) at the end of October. The subject is the same as what is discussed on this board on a daily basis: earning a fully-accredited legitimate degree by alternate, cheaper methods. So far, my story line goes: Intro: Why we need degrees Understanding accreditation Testing options Typical costs Limitations Test taking strategies What great suggestions could you all give me that I should relay to these folks? Thanks!!! Lecture Help! - cookderosa - 09-13-2009 AirMedic Wrote:Hi All,>> I did a CLEP presentation 2 years back to a group, and no one wanted to talk about schools like the big 3. That was too much of a leap. (you'd be suprised at how many people won't try a CLEP) When I did the presentation last year, I came prepared with our state /university policies as well as the local community college. If your state U has a CLEP policy, you'll gain lots of respect from your group by knowing it and showing them how to work inside the system. Show them exactly where they can test (as well as how to find a testing center if they are from out of town) and exactly how it applies to credit in B&M schools. You can also say something like "some colleges have no CLEP cap, and I have included a list of those schools in your packet" (the big 3) Also, it's worth pointing out to your group that you don't need to be a certain age or a student at any college to earn credit, and it's good for 20 years, so they can always decide to use it later IF they go back to school. Lecture Help! - peace123 - 09-13-2009 Do not forget to do a plug for IC. , REA, Petersons, etc.I did not see PLA on your list for discussion. While not a popular choice on this board it is definitely an alternate option for earning credits. Also ACE credits ( eg: Aleks or NFA) and PONSI credits, could be added to your list. Additionally programs where you take courses through one company and get credit through a college. Eg: Fema/Fredericks, Straighterline/FHSU. Lastly, you could talk about a degree plans/Roadmaps by showing them how to create one and how to lump studying for similar subjects in a row. Lecture Help! - Farmerboy - 09-14-2009 I would also stress the time savings that can be acheived. It is really possible that somebody could complete a degree within three years while working full time. Lecture Help! - NAP - 09-17-2009 Hi! This is such an awesome opportunity you have to share all of this with so many people. If you think AP exams are more commonly known, you could start with those and then say CLEP and DSST are also widely accepted exam programs for college credit. Many colleges allow 30 credits to be filled by exams, so that is worth a 25% scholarship on school expenses. The credit-by-exam policy at the college where they intend to graduate is the most important. My local community college wanted me to CLEP out of freshman English, but I knew I had to take the class because that is what the four-year college I was going to transfer to would accept. Have fun with this project. You are going to open a lot of eyes. Let us know how it goes. We’ll be cheering for you! Lecture Help! - AirMedic - 10-31-2009 Ok, did the lecture at the conference today, with a fantastic reception. I've been invited to do it again at the conference in Dallas in 2010. Unfortunately I have had to leave a LOT of info out due to time constraints, but got the general point across in an hour and a half. If it would help anyone, the powerpoint is available HERE Lecture Help! - cookderosa - 10-31-2009 AirMedic Wrote:Ok, did the lecture at the conference today, with a fantastic reception.
