TESC Credit distribution Requirments - croc870 - 08-12-2009 A friend just asked me for help writing a degree plan for her, but she's looking at TESC (NJ resident). I know a lot about Excelsior, but even after going through TESC catalog, I've still got quite a few questions. Hopefully some people here can help. 1. How are CLEP tests listed-- are they all 100 level? I know only two 100 level classes are acceptable at TESC for the Area of Study: Liberal Studies degree, so I can't figure out how much credit can come from CLEP/DSST tests. 2. Are there any restrictions on ALEKS coursework-- such as only allowing so many hours to be used? 3. How do general education electives differ from the free electives? If she planned to use the 25 hours of Fema andthe two NFA Ace classes, would there be anywhere to fit in the other NFA Terrorism class? Hope some people here can help, because I'm at a loss (after everything I've read here, I've decided not to bother trying to ask their advisers these questions lol) TESC Credit distribution Requirments - addision - 08-12-2009 Ok I beleive I can answer two out of three of your questions. 1. I can't really answer this one but I do beleive if you pass the equivalent clep exam TESC will give you credit for the course and full course credit. 2. For ALEKS, if you reach the 70% completion mark (search for a definition of this) for one of the courses TESC gives credit for, you can then have the course transcripted through ACE, and TESC will accept it and give you full course credit (I beleive 3 units), there is no partial credit. 3. General Ed. electives are electives from the areas of humanities, science, mathematics etc., free electives are almost anything else that schools will award credit for. I know PE doesn't count. FEMA falls under the free electives unless you are going for an Emerg. management degree. I beleive I read that someone got 25 units of free electives awarded for FEMA credits in the liberal arts degree, and I think they will award 15 units for all other degrees. Please correct me if I am wrong. I needed 18 units of free electives for the business degree, of which I used 13 FEMA. Are there any restrictions on ALEKS coursework-- such as only allowing so many hours to be used? Aleks is on an ACE transcript: from page 114 of the catalog (also see page 109 bottom and 110 (top) it address ACE course work ) Thomas Edison State College also will accept the recommendations of the American Council on Education (ACE) for examinations as listed in the Guide to Educational Credit by Examinations, 1981 edition and subsequent editions. The maximum credit award for ACE recommended credit is 90 credits for the baccalaureate degree and 45 credits for the associate degree. TESC Credit distribution Requirments - croc870 - 08-12-2009 Using a previously posted spreadsheet, I have edited out a degree plan. While she is extremely intelligent, she has never seen the inside of a classroom. She was a home schooled Missionary Kid (fluent in Cebuano and Koine Greek-- I'm still looking for more information on how to obtain credits for those two, looking into the BYU exams, anyone have any other ideas?) so she basically has no formal education to speak of. She completed a ACE accredited 24 hour art class that I'm using to fill some of the holes, so I know that's not applicable to everyone. Also planning on using the 27 free hours in Homeland security as well, so hopefully those will be easy. I've tried to use every single History exam, both because the advanced ones are 300/400 levels and because I think there should be a significant amount of carryover. Let me know what everyone thinks, with cost considerations higher credit awards would be preferred over lower credits. Did I miss anything? Anyone see anything that would make things easier? TESC Credit distribution Requirments - peace123 - 08-12-2009 American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages http://www.acenet.edu/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home&Template=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=6913 I am not sure if they are still testing for that language but they were at one time. If they no longer are they may know who is. TESC Credit distribution Requirments - croc870 - 08-12-2009 After doing some digging it looks like the exam is still offered. There's a lot of conflicting information online regarding this program however.
