Masters at AMU/APU? - monkeyboy - 06-21-2009

Is anyone currently taking masters courses at AMU or APU? (American Military University/American Public University)

I am close to done with my BS at UMUC(only 3 credits left) and am considering AMU/APU for a Masters

Was wondering what your thoughts were, how the course work was, etc.

I am taking the Master's program at AMU.

They have been good as far as getting my financial aid and taking my money online. If that is a "good" school then they are GREAT.

I have found the instructors to be less than flexible when needing a course extension due to family hardship and emergency moves.

I requested an emergency extension for a course and was denied and as you can see I am still quite bitter about it.

I am looking for other options.... AMU has alot of deadlines and you have to have assignments in on time or they POUND you......

Good luck.

I think extensions depend on the instructor. I have had 2 instructors at AMU/APU who are very laid back - even on late assignments. And I was recently approved for an extenstion in one of my classes. However, I was enrolled in another class (but dropped out during the first week Thank God) where the instructor was extremely strict, did not accept late assignments and stated that she very rarely granted extensions for any reason. I remember that instructors name and always try to avoid her when registering for classes. I know it is a graduate degree, but these are online programs aimed at full time working adults and IMO they need to give some leway for late assignments sometimes. On the other hand, they have courses starting every month and most of the instructors are listed for multiple courses at the same time, all with different due dates, etc. That may be why some of them are so strict.

Over all I love AMU/APU - I have taken both undergrad and graduate courses there. In most of the courses I have taken the assignments have been -

-1 post and 2 follow ups on a discussion question on the message board each week
-usually another short assignment (either questions at the end of a chapter or questions the instructor chooses) that have to be uploaded on a actual word doc instead of posting to the message board
-Mid term multi choice exam (20-25 questions)
-Final Multi choice exam and (20-25 questions)
-A paper 5-12 pages in length depending on the course

I have had a few courses that did not require a final multi choice exam but not one yet that did not require a final paper. The undergrad english courses I took required 2-3 pages papers every week.

Hope this info helps.
