Best Natural Science to take - frankiebleyes - 03-20-2009

I have just come from my local community college advising center. I need to retake (despite now having 12 natural sciences) an additional 8 hours of natural sciences for my AS. Anyone have a good suggestion as to the best exam to take, least amount of study to achieve this as I am on a month (from study time to result time) deadline for these credits.

I only ask because so many here have already taken enough courses to have graduated already. I would appreciate any and all recommendations. Thinking about biology, but want quickest and easiest. Also, what about lab requirement?

By the way I love this board I have taken six tests already and any success I am having is very much due to all the helpful suggestions made by the members here.

Hi!

A few questions first-
1) Have you taken any of the science CLEPs or DSSTs?
2) What natural science credits do you already have? Some of these exams could be considered duplicate credit.

Keeping that in mind, here are my suggestions:

Environment & Humanity DSST (3)
Astronomy DSST (3)

These two were the "easiest" for me, and I enjoyed learning about them. The Biology CLEP is also very doable, and would give you 6 credits for the price of one CLEP. The Natural Science CLEP is mostly biology, mixed with chemistry, physics, and few misc. categories. I recommend taking the Biology CLEP before the NS CLEP if you attempt both.

Does your school require you to have a lab? There are lots of options for online classes with labs if you want to go that route. Let us know! Smile

I agree w/sunshine. These 2 tests where fairly easy. There was plenty of information in the IC flashcards along with feedback to get you through these 2 exams. Good Luck

Sunshine, do you know if there are any online lab only courses. Ie. Take the exams and just take the lab component online.

I have had biology, microbiology, chemistry and physiology and anatamy (both chem and anatomy with labs). All credits gone from another era. My current school does require lab. I appreciate suggestions of clep (thought about biology go for six), but still would need two lab hours one for each three. Spent hours on internet other night looking for natural science with lab through accredited school but had no luck. If anyone knows of any school (accredited regionally), I would greatly appreciate the info as my scholarship rides on me completing this before summer classes start.

With all that science in your background, you shouldn't have any trouble with the Natural Sciences CLEP. Possibly Biology CLEP, too, though that one of course goes deeper. If I were in your position, I think I would spend an intensive couple of weeks brushing up and then take CLEP Nat Sci.

AMU (American Military University) has the labs you are looking for. 8 week duration. I'm not sure if you can just take the labs though. I would shoot them an email. They are RA and NA, so accredidation will not be an issue. Good Luck

I have also looked for these. I finally gave up and am getting my degree from TESC without any further labs needed. I do remember something from a college in North Carolina I believe where you did the labs in your kitchen.
What will your degree be? What school?

So are AP and micro w/ lab expired and you need to retake them? You can take AP 1 and 2, and microbiology all with labs at Clovis Community College. It's the cheapest online science lab I have ever found. I'm taking 14 credits with them this fall for $740! I'll be doing all my nursing sciences with them.

I don't know of any exams that could be combined with a lab- I was thinking of actual online classes w/ labs. They can be tough to find, but they're out there.

I am currently taking a microbiology class w/ lab online through my local CC. This summer I will be taking an UL genetics class w/ lab online through the university. I chose these because I qualify for in-state tuition, but I found quite a few schools offering online labs during my search.

Just a few examples:

Oregon State University: Chemistry w/ Lab
Ecatalog Subject List -- Schedule of Classes -- Oregon State University -- Extended Campus -- Ecampus
OSU is great because they don't have out-of-state tuition fees for their online classes- just one price per credit.

Excelsior has a 1 credit biology lab option for anyone just looking for a lab without the class. https://www.excelsior.edu/Excelsior_College/Excelsior_College_Courses

I had the most success finding online lab options by checking with individual schools, rather than doing a basic Google search. In some cases, I didn't realize the classes had a lab component until I read the course description.
