Quantitative Reasoning help, please! - mongoose65 - 01-25-2009
Each time I think I'm done with my math requirements I find a new one. I hate math (more of a Humanities person) and have no real desire or need to learn it (except maybe statistics).
Does anyone have any good advice for the EASIEST (emphasis on EASIEST), cheapest and fastest way to satisfy the EC quantitative reasoning requirement? I know about ALEKS and the DSST exams. Wondering if there were any other options, particularly for an Intro or Elementary type course and particularly one that can be "tested out" of.
Statistics would serve me well in the long run. How much math is a prerequisite for an intro stats exam?

My suggestion is expensive, but you should look at the 4 credit stats class I am taking (starts Tuesday) at Harvard through their Extension. Undergrad credit for the class is $800 (grad credit $1700), but requires no prior knowledge or math ability LOL. This is the nicest looking math class ever- I'm actually excited about it. The distance classes are "taught" in semi-live time (48 hour delay) and so you have the info presented to you vs. self teaching. Really though, the exams will be open book and the class is 100% distance (you fax in homework). You can "meet" the professor and watch the first hour of lecture for free.

I took psychological statistics online from Brigham Young. It's a bit cheaper than Harvard, at around $550 and is for 4 upper division credits. You are essentially responsible for teaching yourself the material and checking a box on the course website that says you've done the homework (on the honor system). There are three proctored exams you have to take, each with 10 multiple choice questions on actual math problems and 5 essay questions. They're not open book, but you can use a graphing calculator. I used "statistics for people who hate statistics" to prep for the test and it was very, very good. I had failed college algebra twice in the past but managed to get a C+ with minimal effort.

You say you know about ALEK's. I wish I paid better attention to some of these posts. I jumped into ALEK's Business Stats with only a weak Beginning Algebra background (ALEK's) and being out of school for years and now I'm plucking my eyelashes out. I'm at 50% complete and I'm crawling like a two-legged hamster. I see people complete this in about a week and I'll be lucky if I complete this in a month. Chebyshev's Theorem, are you kiddin me? Sound advice - Don't dive less you know the depth. Statistics survival guide: If you drink coffee, STOP! You will be overtaken by urges to break things. Keep aspirin close at hand, the headaches are more frequent the further along you are. If the kids are home, send them out to the pizza joint or on a play date.....they don't really need to hear or see this, do they? I strongly suggest heavy bag work prior to and after every assessment. Occasionally listen to Yanni for comfort, any country music to know there are others out there who are worse off than you and most definitely, Iron Maiden, just so you remember....there is Life After Death! In the name of the father..........

Gary, great post. Although I find the Yanni might make me go mad and the Iron Maiden is good for relaxing. Truth of the matter is EC in their infinite wisdom says they will not take Business Statistics for the math credit (they say it's applied prof or business). Did they tell you something different? It is actually the one I had planned to take (while holding my nose of course)! EC seems hell bent on my taking algebra or something like it.

I took it as a credit bank only. Why? How the hell do I know? I can't figure that out. There was an old Joe Walsh album called "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get"... Well, the older I get, the worser I think. I am trying to get into federal employment and I thought another higher level math would show more effort. I recently went for an interview for the VA, I was very qualified for the position and there were numerous openings. Felt great after the interview and didn't get a call back. After that, I told myself, more classes dealing w/business. What did I do, I jumped headfirst into a beatdown. Stats is up there w/Latin and Gregorian chants, if you know what I mean? I feel like I am under attack by numerous enemies, foreign and domestic. When I log on, it's like entering a confined space, with no egress. It's quite bad actually. But I promised myself....... NO MORE MATH. BTW Excelsior, if this isn't math, your not a real college. Well, time to take another dive, it's acid wash time. Hope I answered your question.

yes, I'm fairly sure it would. It's a 6 credit clep, not the easiest thing in the world. I might give it a shot though but I'm saving it for the end.
