Excelsior Ethics requirement - MISin08 - 01-20-2009

Does anyone who has enrolled at Excelsior know if DSST Ethics in America fulfills the Ethics Business Core requirement? Or do they require a 300/400 class? I found the catalog a little vague and slippery on this and on first reading thought it does. Then last night I re-read and came away with the impression that it does not. Of course EC is the final authority, I'd just like to read what others have experienced. Thanks!

It will fulfill the ethics requirement but will not count toward the 45 hour business component requirement. It will fit into the Arts & Sciences. A business ethics course would count toward the 45 hours and fulfill the ethics rqmt.

DSST Ethics in America will fulfill either the core or Arts & Sciences requirement.

Did you get that from a business advisor? On p. 30 the catalog reads, "Subjects that may be used to satisfy this component [Ethics] include, but are not limited to, business ethics, intro to ethics, biomedical ethics...NOTE: Depending on the content, the ethics course may be classified as business credit or as arts and sciences credit."

The same note is true of org behavior and my advisor did say that the org behavior DSST could go in either one, but usually went into arts/sciences. Please let me know if you were able to apply the ethics dsst toward the 45 hours...thanks!

I forgot to add that I believe it's EC that makes the "classification," i.e. they decide which category it will fit in.

If you are an Excelsior Business major (which I was), and you take the DSST Ethics in America exam, you may apply it to the core requirement that is outlined in the General Business degree (which I did). Furthermore if you take the ECE Ethics exam, you may apply that as an Upper Level Business Course (which I did).

Now if you are going for something other than a business degree, then the DSST Ethics in America will count for Arts & Sciences. Same goes for Organizational Behavior....if you are going for a Business degree it is counted as business credit....if you are going for a non-business degree it is counted as Arts & Sciences.

....or if you have plenty of Upper Level Business Credit and have already taken the ECE Ethics to fulfill the Business requirement, then if you take the DSST Ethics at that point (having already fulfilled the Ethics and Upper Level component, it would count as Arts & Sciences.

If you are going for an Excelsior General Business Degree, then use DSST Ethics in America to fulfill the core requirement, then take the ECE Ethics exam for Upper Level credit.

Thanks for your feedback. I should have 47 business credits apart from Ethics when all's said and done, so I'm not worried about where they apply it. What's important to me is that I don't want to take the DSST only to find out I need the ECE to satisfy. I have plenty of humanities credit already. (Of course, I would completely understand if EC wants business majors to take the more rigorous ethics exam. Look at the news...it's just that price tag for ECE pains me...)

Both the DSST and ECE Ethics exams are similar. They cover much of the same material. Excelsior will accept either exam as fulfilling the Ethics requirement for the Business degree.
