P*ssed off at UoP!!! - AKay - 07-23-2006 *Begin Rant* Sooo I passed my intro to sociology clep which my academic counselor said would be good for the 3 credits im deficient in lower levels for social sciences. Great! Im thinking i will only need the 3 for physical sciences and intended on taking that August 1st. Well I look and the credits were not applied apparently its duplication of credit from my transfer credits with a sociology 101 class i took in 1996. so now i have to appeal or take another clep test which im prepared to do. But guess what UoP did? they register me for my next class which is a social science class and my class after that is my physical science class. I guess they dont want to lose the 1400 a freaking class! I will have to pay them. not to mention the numerous papers and presentations I will be forced to do. *End Rant* I have left numerous voicemails today, expressing my discontent over this. I am not paying for these 2 classes. I am prepared to transfer to UoPs online campus or to Excelsior but i dont know if i will meet my graduation date of April 31st 2007 so I can apply for grad school before thier deadlines(may31st, june1st). My questions are which 2 cleps are easiest to satisfy the 3 social science credits and 3 physical science credits i need(keep in mind the problem i have with the intro to soc clep) Also what are the odds that i can transfer to excelsior and still finish by April 31st? im soooo sad, frustrated, disheartened and flat out P*ssed!! arghhhhH!! Sorry guys. AKay P*ssed off at UoP!!! - anar579 - 07-23-2006 First off, Excelsior confers degrees monthly. Check out the Publications Request page on their website, and download the Graduation Processing Parameters document for dates. In other words, if you take the appropriate exams, classes, or combination of these, you should be able to graduate by your deadline. Also, if you do transfer to Excelsior, they will also consider the Sociology CLEP and the class you took in 1996 as duplicate credit, and I'm not sure if they'd throw one of them out altogether. As for what Social Sciences and Physical Sciences exams you could take, how about these: Social Sciences CLEP American Government CLEP Human Growth and Development CLEP Introduction to Educational Psychology CLEP Introductory Psychology CLEP Introductory Sociology CLEP Principles of Macroeconomics CLEP Principles of Microeconomics CLEP Social Sciences & History (General exam, 6 credits) CLEP U.S. History I: Early Colonizations to 1877 CLEP U.S. History II: 1865 to the Present CLEP Western Civilization I: Ancient Near East to 1648 CLEP Western Civilization II: 1648 to the Present DSST Art of the Western World DSST Western Europe since 1945 DSST An Introduction to the Modern Middle East DSST Human/Cultural Geography DSST Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union DSST A History of the Vietnam War DSST The Civil War and Reconstruction DSST Foundations of Education DSST Lifespan Developmental Psychology DSST General Anthropology DSST Drug and Alcohol Abuse DSST Introduction to Law Enforcement DSST Criminal Justice DSST Fundamentals of Counseling Physical Sciences CLEP Biology CLEP Chemistry CLEP Natural Sciences (General exam, 6 credits) DSST Astronomy DSST Environment & Humanity DSST Here's to Your Health DSST Physical Geology DSST Principles of Physical Science I Of course, you have to make sure UoP accepts your exams of choice. Also, the General CLEP exams are frequently not accepted as fulfilling Social Science or Physical Science credit by many schools. P*ssed off at UoP!!! - Librevore - 07-23-2006 What a helpful list, Ana. You are great! Hi AKay, The Intro. Psych and the Intro. Ed Psych on Ana's list above are not very difficult and wouldn't take much time to study for using IC's flashcards. Of the physical sciences, biology is tough but very doable with IC and applying some good study skills. Can't speak from experience on the rest so perhaps others will be able to give you more input. I know a lot of people say that Here's to Your Health is pretty easy. I sure am sorry to hear about your situation. How frustrating. Librevore P*ssed off at UoP!!! - AKay - 07-23-2006 Thanks for the help!! I forgot to mention the academic counselor no longer works there and now im having a hard time doubling up my classes. This sucks because on august 1st i should have been at 84 credits with only 36 credits(12 classes to go) which is/was very doable by April 31st. UoP has also made it difficult to transfer some of my certifications and previous computer school learning so most of these upper classes are stuff I have done I just have to "serve the time" taking the course. AKay P*ssed off at UoP!!! - MagicATC - 07-24-2006 I hate how universities have become a money making business instead of a real concern for education (some better then others). I recommend to go to Excelsior instead. They have always taken my CLEPs plus they have all of their own upper level exams. Also I have always heard good things about Thomas Edison. I feel your pain. I had similar experiances just with my community college. I could go on with that. I wonder if withdrawing from them would get them to change their mind? -Magic P*ssed off at UoP!!! - busymom - 07-24-2006 Hi Akay I am a UOP student also and can relate to your frustration over how they operate! Just because they sign you up for classes doesn't mean you have to pay for them or take them though. I would just call and tell them you are in the process of taking CLEP tests to fulfill those requirements. I have taken MANY breaks from taking classes and it has never been a problem. Good Luck! Denise P*ssed off at UoP!!! - AKay - 07-25-2006 ok update! Im not taking those 2 lower level classes! My next class is directed study and is visual basic. however my new AC told me us history 1 is not a social science its a history so i cant take that one to satisfy the 3 credits. I think im just going to take the intro to psy clep in about 3 weeks. Im taking Biology august 1st. I hope the academic counselors are smarter in grad school lol. Thanks for the help/advice guys! I have never read in any college catalog where history was separate from social science. I'm not saying your AC is wrong, it is just unusual in my experience. Personally, I'd ask your AC directly what CLEPS/DSST tests can be taken to meet the requirements and get that in writing. I agree with SimonTam, It seems strange that they would separate History from Social Science. Usually, colleges require a certain amount of credits in "History and Social Science". It is unusual for them to require specific "History" credits, and then separate "Social Science" credits. I would certainly double check that. Especially since you have recently experienced an Academic Counselor who wasn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas Tree! hilarious I'm glad you got the course registrations sorted out. They can't FORCE you to register/pay for any course that you don't want to pay for. It sounds like you will need to be really careful with these guys. Double check everything, keep on top of things, and get things in writing. Cover yourself, Snazzlefrag |
