Prior Learning Experience Portfolio Evaluation - Professor_Adam - 01-04-2009

Has anyone here put together or have experience with what's involved with putting together a "Prior Learning Experience Portfolio Evaluation" for grad school?

According to the Andrew Jackson University handbook, you can earn up to 25 percent of your grad degree through this method. Of course there's like a $225 evaluation fee involved. Anyone think this is worth it? Has anyone on the forum been successful in this or know someone who was? Thanks.

Adam,

I do not have experience with this in regards to grad school but I did take a course at Excelsior to learn how to prepare a portfolio for prior learning.

The text we used for that class is a book titled : Earn College Credit For What You Know ( 4th edition) by Janet Colvin

The first thing I would ask AJU is if they use "course matching" as the basis for granting credit. If they do that means you would find a course they offer ( or if they allow you to use other NA or RA schools courses) and write up a narrative and have back up documentation to prove you have learned the items taught in the class you are matching to. Pretty much the narrative is like writing up your case and presenting it , so make it the best you can.

Also you will want to find out if they will want an autobiography and a resume to be prepared as part of the portfolio.

Also you would want to find out if they have a software program they use to write and submit the portfolio or if it is done the old way ( using paper) or it is even possible they will want you to do it as part written and part interview.

In regards to the fee, is that $225 for all of credits attempted or is it $225 per credit ?

Currently Excelsior ( for the undergrad level- I do not think they allow portfolio beyond undergrad level ) charges $ a fee of $95 per credit attempted and the minimum you can attempt is 6 credits . I know of a state school that charges $300 for all credits attempted. So if your cost is $225 for all the credits you attempt I say it is a good deal.

One thing to consider is this can be a very time consuming process as it requires much planning, documentation, writing, etc. but it can also save you much money in the end.

That was excellent! Hopefully others may be able to shed more light on the process at AJU. Thanks.
