Do I have to transfer in previous credits? - Joel - 12-21-2008

Here's my situation...

I just completed an AS with Excelsior. The credits came from military training, CLEP/DSST, EC courses, and 4 credits from another school I attended before I joined the Army. I plan to continue on with Excelsior once my AS is conferred in Feb and pursue a BS-L.

My question is...since I have already transfered in those 4 credits from the other school for the AS, are those credits automatically going to be applied to the BS?

The reason I ask is that with those credits, I could graduate cum laude, and maybe magna cum laude, but without those 4 credits, I actually have a shot at graduating summa cum laude. It's a long shot, but is impossible with those 4 credits of C's.

I've sent an email to the LA advisors, but don't really anticipate an answer anytime soon. Between the holiday season and my being in between degrees, I'm guessing Im not a priority at the moment.

Anyone know for sure?

I'm going guess, but hear me out. As far as I know, EC doesn't ever accept an "AA" as a block degree the way many state colleges do- meaning if you earned that AA from a local community college, i believe that EC still evaluates each and every credit. This distinction is important, because sometimes the requirements are such, that an AA from one college doesn't jive with the requirements set up for the BA/BS degree...but articulation agreements between community colleges and state schools sometimes work this out in advance and allow it to count 100%. Since EC (as far as I know) doesn't give a block of credit, I'd bet that they will automatically put it on your transcript BUT you could knock it off by duplicating the credit with a higher grade or exam. In the case of a block of credit coming over, you'd be stuck.
Let me know what you find out after break- that's a good question. Like I said, I'm just guessing, but I think you can fix this.

I wish I could, but there is no exam for "Historic & Contemporary Mass Media"

Maybe I'll be able to find a course to duplicate it.

Thanks for the input, I will certainly let you know what I find out.

Hi Joel!

Some information I looked up this weekend may apply to you, too. I posted it here: http://www.degreeforum.net/general-education-testing-discussion/6068-gre-transcription-2.html#post45198

Here's the answer I received from the EC LA advising office...

Quote:Hello Joel,

Thank you for your inquiry. Initially the credits on file that were used towards the Associates Degree will be used towards the initial evaluation for the Bachelors of Science (BSL) degree. Once this initial evaluation has been completed, you will have a grace period of 30 days to make changes to your academic record. During this period you can elect to not have the credits from your previous school used towards the BSL degree.

That sounds like great news!

Thank you for informing me of my mix-up. I have looked more closely at the new transcript policy and posted some highlights here – http://www.degreeforum.net/general-education-testing-discussion/6068-gre-transcription-3.html#post45377
