I know this post will fall on sympathic ears especially reading all of the other posts that are related to this subject. I have just cancelled my College Mathematics exam. I have been studying for over a month now and I just can't grasp the concepts. I have used ALEKS, InstantCert, Cracking the Clep, and the Annenberg videos and everytime I think that I learned something I take a Peterson's Practice test and score worse. My last score was a 29 :mad:
The funny thing is that I really like math. It has been a long time, but I remember being very good at it. This CLEP would have been my 4th one, but I think I might have to take a class. I only need 3 credits of basic math, so I might just have to pay the money and take the online class and get a tutor.
I am thankful for everyone's post on this subject because in reading them I realized that I shouldn't wait until the last minute and that maybe CLEP isn't the best way that my mind works with math.

I am happy to be joining this forum today and this is my first post. I can relate to your sentiments about Math. I am a UOP online student and I completed both required Math courses last summer using the ALEKS system and all of the resources I could find in the internet. Whew, it was quite a challenge and I remember using the words, "math trauma" to describe my feelings about it. :eek: I have heard other students mention having a tutor to complete the class. I really think you are on the right track and should consider whatever it takes to complete the required course(s). Then it will be over and done with. I remember when I finally passed both math courses the feeling of exhiliration completely wiped out the feelings of math trauma. Hang in there! You can do it!!

[SIZE="3"][COLOR="Navy"]I attempted CLEP College Mathematics around a month ago and failed (43) after a month of study. I currently have 123 credit hours and only need 2 math credits to graduate so I'm going about it this way.
I have enrolled in a basic mathematics course from Texas State (see attached) with only 7 lessons and 1 exam and have just started it. However, I will also take the CLEP Algebra and (if needed) the DANTES Algebra exams hoping to pass one or the other.
If not, I still have the Texas State course in motion. If this doesn't work, then I'll try the Excelsior course - Math 113 (WebCT) course that isn't proctured and I should be able to get over the hump.
I purposely saved math for last as it has definately taken some of the wind out of my sails BUT I will not fail. I wish you the best of luck and urge that you find a new source of wind power to get those sails filled again!![/COLOR][/SIZE]

Being in the same boat as pretty much everyone here, I ended up taking the MAT113 (Web based version) course from Excelsior College.
The up side to the class is that it is EASY. The home work consisted of 1 quiz with 10 multiple choice questions per week (13 quizzes total), with a 50 question midterm and 50 question final. There are plenty of FREE online calculators that will not only help you with your work, but explain how the questions where solved to you. The tests and quizzes are not proctored, so feel free to use any type of calculator you wish
The down side is the cost ($615.00 for military), and time. The classes run for a total of 15 weeks, but you might only do a total of 10-12 hours of actual course work between your quizzes, midterm, and final.
If you have the time (and money), this is an extremely good option. You might find it worth it in the end.
One final note, MAT115 College Algebra is a bit more difficult but very doable. The workload for MAT115 is the same as MAT113.
