RE: Calculus Is an Admissions Barrier—Even for Students Who Weren’t Offered It - DegreeNerd - 10-24-2026 Everyone should do calculus at High School, it's not just engineering but so many other careers you close the door to if you haven't done the maths beforehand. Like what, other than engineering, astronomy, or physics? I've worked in IT basically my whole career and have never needed to use calculus. I'm not at all saying kids shouldn't learn it! I'm just not as sure as you seem to be about its direct relevance for most people. I mean most people in those fields will take it in college anyways. What additional doors open when a high school student takes calculus other than possibly skipping an introductory class in college, if applicable? You're going to struggle massively in computer science if you are lacking the mathematical maturity to even handle basic high school calculus. Many other fields such as Statistics and Economics and Finance and Chemistry and etc also need at least a very basic level of calculus such as you get from high school. Many other fields would at least benefit from having the basic awareness and mental development that high school calculus gives you. |
