UK Prohibition Begins in 2027: Lifetime Tobacco Ban - LevelUP - 10-05-2026 If you ever think things are getting crazy in the U.S., take a look at what’s happening in other parts of the world. It can make you appreciate just how many freedoms Americans still have. UK lawmakers approve lifetime smoking ban for today’s under-18s https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/uk-lawmakers-approve-lifetime-smoking-ban-todays-under-18s-2026-04-22/ I wonder whether a law like this will actually hold up long-term. After all, governments often claim these kinds of restrictions are about “your safety,” but it’s worth asking where protecting people ends and controlling their personal choices begins. And smoking isn’t the only thing being targeted. The UK is also moving toward additional restrictions affecting young people in 2027. Energy drinks to be banned for under-16s in England from April https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czrjg0jxkpno There has also been debate over restricting social media access for children under 16: UK: Social media ban for under 16s ‘right diagnosis, wrong prescription’ https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/06/uk-social-media-ban-for-under-16s-right-diagnosis-wrong-prescription/ Regardless of how you feel about smoking, energy drinks, or social media, I think the bigger question is where the line should be drawn. The irony is that people sometimes complain about religious restrictions, especially from various forms of Christianity, but at this rate, the government may end up being more restrictive than Jesus Christ. RE: UK Prohibition Begins in 2027: Lifetime Tobacco Ban - SteveFoerster - 10-05-2026 You're right, it's wild how often the lesson that prohibition doesn't work has to keep being relearned over and over. UK Prohibition Begins in 2027: Lifetime Tobacco Ban - NotJoeBiden - 10-05-2026 Lol ya, good thing America doesn’t continue to spent trillions for a prohibition-based “war on drugs” that never goes anywhere… RE: UK Prohibition Begins in 2027: Lifetime Tobacco Ban - Mint Berry Crunch - 10-05-2026 I will say that aside from vaping, smoking in the U.S. has generally been decreasing over the years. This I can tell you: I thank Jesus and my primary care physician anytime I hear mention of cigarette smoking or any other addiction. I smoked at least a pack a day of Filtered Camel or Malrboro cigarettes everyday from ages 20 to 45. I tried many times to stop I failed every time. Then one day when I was 45 my doctor said - Charles - You need to stop smoking I said I can't. He asked me to try a new pharmaceutical program. Like magic! within a week I knew that I would never smoke again. I am looking forward to the day when I become an ex-smoker for more years than I was a smoker. All addictions are horrible. I am concerned with the constant opportunities and advertisements for online gambling. Another THANK YOU JESUS! If I ever get tempted to make some bets, it will be just like throwing money out the window for me. Discussion points: Do a FREE people need guardrails? Who, if anyone should set and enforce guardrails? Certainly, something went horribly wrong at the University of Mississippi too. RE: UK Prohibition Begins in 2027: Lifetime Tobacco Ban - Sagan - 10-05-2026 I'm in the UK right now. It's remarkable how this country gets behind progressive initiatives that improve the lives of its people. As for prohibition, it's a mixed bag. But the U.S. was highly successful in changing its society regarding smoking. I grew up in an era when smoking was threaded throughout our lives. Teachers smoked in lounges while on break. In high school we had a student smoking area. Ashtrays were as common as chairs. Smoking was allowed in almost all public areas, even hospital waiting rooms. Theaters had smoking sections, as did airplanes. Cars were equipped with cigarette lighters in the dash and ashtrays in the armrests. It was everywhere. The Marlboro Man and Joe Camel tried to keep it that way. But the government eventually clamped down. First came the ban on television advertising, then later print advertising. Localities started restricting cigarette purchases to minors, then restricted smoking in public areas. It all worked. It's so much better now. Gadding about London, it's amazing how clear the air is and how clean everything is. The vast majority of automobiles and buses are electric, and so many people get about on scooters and bicycles. We took a 45-minute tour of the city in an open-air electric bus and never once smelled the exhaust of an automobile or bus engine. Sure, there were some gas and diesel cars on the road, but so few as to be irrelevant. I believe in the collective power of government and its ability to redirect society--when judiciously focused. OMG! I pray these people are only stereotyped play actors! As I understand, driving is a privilege not a right. Certainly, Driving While Intoxicated should be prohibited. Prohibition of open container alcohol products is probably a good thing too. RE: UK Prohibition Begins in 2027: Lifetime Tobacco Ban - SteveFoerster - 10-06-2026 "As I understand, driving is a privilege not a right." This will probably make me sound like Mr. One Or Two Beers, but I've always hated that formulation. People should have the right to drive the cars they paid for on the road their taxes paved. The system places understandable restrictions on people's rights all the time. We have freedom of speech, but it doesn't include fighting words or defamation. The right to keep and bear arms has so many asterisks after it it looks like the Millennium Falcon activating its hyperdrive. To say one has a right to drive doesn't mean there can't be understandable requirements to exercise it like showing you know how, or that your car isn't unsafe to others, or that you're capable of covering expenses if you cause an accident. So why should the formulation for the most common means of travel be any different from other rights? RE: UK Prohibition Begins in 2027: Lifetime Tobacco Ban - Sagan - 10-07-2026 I guess it depends on one's definition of a "right." If a "right" is absolutely unassailable, do they even exist? Or, as George Carlin put it, they're not really rights if they can be taken from you. They're privileges. I think something is a right if everyone is initially entitled to it. But that "right" can be altered or removed under certain circumstances. Unless specifically guaranteed (like the rights put forth in the Constitution) Thus, driving a vehicle is a right, once someone has attained it. But it can be altered or removed based on that same person's behavior. Whereas the protections against cruel and unusual punishment provided by the 8th Amendment cannot. Of course, the Constitution is a 4-page document subject to interpretation by all three branches of government, sometimes in competition with one another. |
