UNO Maverick Flex Path CBE Grad Cert in Executive Business - Jonathan Whatley - 04-28-2026

The University of Nebraska Omaha is launching its online competency-based education program Maverick Flex Path.

The first Maverick Flex Path program is a Graduate Certificate in Executive Business. This 14-semester-hour certificate consists of seven courses of 2 semester hours each. A digital badge is also awarded for each course.

Courses are self-paced. Tuition is a flat rate $15 000 for the entire certificate program. For admission, “A minimum of six (6) years of professional-level work experience is required; however, applicants with fewer years of relevant experience are considered.”

The course structure is non-standard and it may be hard to transfer these courses elsewhere. However, it appears nearly identical to the structure of the Executive Business Certificate UNO offers in non-CBE modalities, either in-person or online. Those formats do stack towards UNO’s current low-residency Executive MBA. UNO’s current non-Executive MBA, available either in-person or online, is also based on 2-semester-hour courses, albeit these courses have titles that are more different from the Maverick Flex Path CBE certificate course titles.

The University of Nebraska Omaha is an R2 public university and the second-largest institution in the University of Nebraska System. Note that “University of Nebraska” without differentiation describes the separate flagship institution whose full name is the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. “UNO” is the official abbreviation for the University of Nebraska Omaha, but watch not to confuse it with other users such as the University of New Orleans. Maverick Flex Path is unrelated to FlexPath, the brand for CBE programs at Capella University.

The Graduate Certificate in Executive Business is offered through the University of Nebraska Omaha College of Business Administration, which is accredited by the AACSB. I believe this is the first graduate credit program by online CBE housed in an AACSB-accredited business school. (The ASU Thunderbird Global Management and Entrepreneurship Certificate doesn’t call itself CBE but does have a self-paced format similar to CBE.)

I saw this program announced this morning as well. I am seeing a flat rate of $15,000.

While it is nice to see more schools offer CBE programs, especially an R2. Offering a certificate at that price just doesn't seem like a good option for most.

UNO is crazy.

$15K for a certificate? Get out of here! Executive Business? What does that even mean? Fancy words to say a fool and his money are soon parted.

Quote: Additional programs are in development as part of the Maverick Flex Path [CBE] portfolio, with planned expansion beginning in Fall 2027, pending HLC approval:
  • Graduate Certificate in Instructional Technology Leadership (CEHHS [College of Education, Health, and Human Services])
  • M.S. in Elementary Education with Concentration in ITL (CEHHS)
  • M.S. in Secondary Education with Concentration in ITL (CEHHS)
This phased approach reflects UNO’s commitment to building a high-quality, scalable, competency-based education model, launching with an approved program while continuing to expand a cross-college portfolio aligned with workforce needs and adult learner demand.
