ECE exam format - categ - 09-02-2008

Reading the posts about various ECE exams, I can't get a feel for their format. I see some mentions of essays and they seem to to be brutal. How is ECE different from the CLEP and DSST exam format? I need some lower credit but I will need 30 UL credits to graduate so some of them are going to have to be ECE. I gather that they are more expensive but it seems they are more in-depth then the others. Am I right?

Thanks.

Yes.

I have taken only 2. Organizational Behavior & Ethics: Theory and Practice. Both were served up in a cheesy outdated screen that behaved like a clunky Commodore 64, just like CLEP. Neither had essays. They were more in depth then the DSST's I've taken to date. Both required detailed knowledge of the subject being tested. That said it took only 2 weeks for OB (B!!!!) and 1 week for Ethics (A).

I have taken 5 ECEs. Some, like the English exams and American Dream, do require essays. I have not taken an essay exam. The tests I have taken were pencil and paper format. There were usually 130 to 150 questions. The questions require application of the knowledge that the course covers -- not just basic facts and terms. The exams and questions are very thorough. I would say more thorough than the CLEP and DSST exams.

Excelsior exams do require more intensive study and probably more preparation time. As a rule I have used the specific exam textbook (recommended and for sale on Excelsior's site) as my PRIMARY source to study and use my IC cards only as a review.

The last thing I would say is that you should never take an ECE cold. Also, you should carefully consider taking all DSSTs and CLEPs first (and instead of ECEs) if possible.
