TESC: Received Evaluation. Help! - livingproof - 08-18-2008

After 6 weeks, 4 days, and missing the September registration deadline, I finally got my TESC academic evaluation.

1. Anyone know if I can get them to let me register for September, even though late registration ended 8/15?

2. How do I get permission to take more than 12 credits at a time? I followed the instructions online by calling the Advisement center, who transfered me to the Registrar, who transferred me back to the Advisement center.

3. For "BA Free Electives" it states I need to take 27cr and that

"At least TWO or more different subjects must be included to provide breadth of knowledge in the Liberal Studies Area (e.g., AREA I: Humanities courses: 18 semester hours; AREA II: Social Sciences courses: 9 semester hours; AREA III: Natural Sciences courses: 6 semester hours)"

-- is there a specific number of credits I need to take in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences for this requirement? Or, since I only need two subject areas (which I think I probably already covered?) do 24cr in Humanities and say 3cr in Natural Sciences? I just don't want to get screwed in this area by not abiding by rules such as taking classes in different subject areas.

4. Should I make an appointment with an advisor to make sure I'm taking the right classes and I don't get screwed?

TESC: Received Evaluation. Help! - livingproof - 08-18-2008

PS. I am only willing to take online classes, no CLEP's, etc.

TESC: Received Evaluation. Help! - Lindagerr - 08-18-2008

Are you already enrolled? If so it doesn't cost anything and you should deffinetly make an appointment with an advisor. You can get the courses you are interested in approved and get a better idea of what you still need.

Just curious, why are you so dead set against CLEP etc.? You could easily fill in some of your free electives with FEMA's and they are free. Testing would also save you time and money on your free electives.

TESC: Received Evaluation. Help! - livingproof - 08-18-2008

I'm set on applying to competitive graduate programs in a very small field, so while something like FEMA and testing out would make the obtaining a degree quicker -- that's not really what I'm looking for. I'm looking to take "regular" courses and get letter grades that will influence my GPA. I'm not very comfortable with a graduate advisor seeing my transcript and wondering what I did.

I don't think I'm enrolled? I mean, I have yet to register for a course, if that's the definition of enrolled. Can't register until my financial aid is sorted out, which will hopefully be any day now.

Several people on this forum have gotten into good graduate programs after testing out of several courses. I would not recommend testing out of the core corses in your area of study, but testing out of electives and 100 level courses should not effect acceptance.

You are not enrolled in TESC untill you pay the tuition either ~$1300 in-state for Enrolled options or ~$4000 in-state for comprehensive. I don't think you can not get an Official evaluation and approval of courses or an appointment with an advisor until you are enrolled.

Yes, speak directly with an advisor. I thought Todd Siben was the brightest of the group (except of course Dr Keel who isn't a regular advisor).

If you'll forgive my asking, why would you complete a liberal arts degree at one of the big 3 colleges if you don't intend on using any testing?

Sorry, I didn't read ahead.

In my opinion, if you are applying to a competitive graduate school, you may want to meet with an admissions rep from said prospective college and see exactly what they are looking for. Are you sure a liberal arts degree fits the bill? Also, you must know that TESC is not known for it's educational delivery- they are an assessment college. Meaning, offering courses is an after thought- they don't even have professors..... just something to consider. Perhaps you could supplement with a few classes at your local community college? If your grad school is "really" competitive, TESC might not be the best choice. (not to mention the cost- there are many more affordable options that provide instruction)

Also, you will know you are enrolled when you write them a check for $2000. If you have not done so, your just an applicant.

Don't take this the wrong way, because everyone here is welcome with open arms, but you did come to a TESTING forum LOL, so that's why your statement seems a little out of place.

Don't misunderstand, I have 2 degrees from TESC. But, they are what they are. They fill a need, they check the box. Just be sure it's a good fit for you. I got into every grad school I applied to with my CLEP-ful degree from TESC, including the very competitive University of Illinois. Between you and me and the lamp post, if I were not CLEPping, I wouldn't go to TESC.

My post is choppy and all over the place, but it's late and i'm trying to answer a few of your questions.

First, yes. Schedule an apt with an advisor- Todd Siben is very good.

Also, you will know you are enrolled when you write them a check for a few thousand dollars. If you have not done so, your just an applicant.

Don't take this the wrong way, because everyone here is welcome with open arms, but you did come to a TESTING forum LOL, so that's why your statement seems a little out of place.

Between you and me and the lamp post, if CLEPs were not part of my plan, TESC wouldn't even make my top 10 list.

By the way, your mixing up free electives with gen ed electives. Your free electives can be anything, they do NOT need to be two subject areas. Your liberal arts credits do need to be in two or more areas, but free electives can be any subject- including FEMA classes. By my math, you are simply 2 exams away from your degree plus FEMA credit. You are sitting pretty for finishing before labor day. FEMA classes are not tests.

Thanks.

Liberal Studies major is fine for my area. Undergrad degree major doesn't matter with this particular area of study.

TESC doesn't have professors? From what I can tell, a number of mentors I've seen do in fact have their doctorate. Am I only seeing the select few who do, or are there other doctoral degrees in the staff and assistant profs?

The title at TESC is mentor. There is no lecturing or teaching, simply facilitating. You will discuss with other students, but your mentor is simply available (mostly) to grade your work. The curriculum is written by a curriculum committee and mentored by rotating mentors. So, if you take a class with Mr. Smith, and I take it a year later with Mr. Black, the idea is that we should have the same experience. The pros and cons of that system are for another day. I did have one mentor out of 16 (Thomas Vail) who participated in discussions and answered emails, but my other 15 did not.

What are you planning to study in grad school? Just curious. I'm still sorting out my options too.
