Majoring in hospitality, tourism, or event management—any advice? - lumina - 10-12-2024 My 18-year-old son is looking for a bachelor’s program in hospitality, tourism, or event management, preferably with regional accreditation and under 10K. He has completed almost all Sophia Learning courses for UMPI's BABA in Management & Leadership program, but unfortunately, he is too young to enroll. Any suggestions? Thank you!!! RE: Majoring in hospitality, tourism, or event management—any advice? - jg_nuy - 10-12-2024 Hello: Columbia Southern has a BBA with a concentration in Hospitality and Tourism and they accept a lot of Sophia and other ACE credits: https://www.columbiasouthern.edu/online-degree/view-all-programs/bachelors/bs-business-administration/hospitality-tourism/ Sophia list: https://columbiasouthern.sophia.org/#courses TESU has a few degrees that may be good for those careers: Organizational Leadership, Operations Management, General Management, with options to add additional certificates: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:TESU RE: Majoring in hospitality, tourism, or event management—any advice? - ss20ts - 10-13-2024 (10-12-2024, 08:50 PM)lumina Wrote: My 18-year-old son is looking for a bachelor’s program in hospitality, tourism, or event management, preferably with regional accreditation and under 10K. UMPI doesn't offer any of these programs in YourPace. His best bet is going to be TESU since he's looking to use ACE credits. He'll still need RA credits at TESU. UMPI's BABA in Management & Leadership was his initial choice. Since my son is too young to enroll, we are exploring other options. After doing some research, we are now leaning towards the Bachelor of Science in Management at the University of the Cumberlands. It seems to be a great alternative. As for TESU, he doesn't have any RA credits yet, just some XAMK courses. Thank you! RE: Majoring in hospitality, tourism, or event management—any advice? - jg_nuy - 10-13-2024 XAMK courses count as RA courses at TESU. My son had his evaluated via ACEI & most went into electives, while some went into his major & gen ed. Cumberlands is a good choice too. The tuition includes all the books & they accept a good amount of ACE credits. TESU appears to be a promising choice too, but we feel somewhat overwhelmed by the information available on DegreeForum. We're concerned about potentially overlooking important details that could lead to unnecessary costs. Could you share any insights on how to get started with the application process? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help! RE: Majoring in hospitality, tourism, or event management—any advice? - jg_nuy - 10-13-2024 You're welcome. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, but you've got this! My recommendation is to put together a spreadsheet with a tab for each possible choice school and do the best that you can in mapping the possible credits that could be accepted: -For TESU, use the degree maps available - the business degrees are very similar and the Sophia courses will go mostly into the general education, a little bit in the business core and into electives. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:TESU -For Cumberlands, the following thread has a pretty good listing of what transferred in from Sophia for a business degree: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/attachment.php?aid=4735 -For Columbia Southern, check the required courses for the degree and use the Sophia page to map what your son already has. This will give you a solid place to start. You can also share your spreadsheet (read only) here from Google Sheets so others could provide better advise. With TESU, it is a good idea to just apply to lock in the catalog and get your upfront initial evaluation: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison_State_University RE: Majoring in hospitality, tourism, or event management—any advice? - lumina - 10-13-2024 (10-13-2024, 03:33 PM)jg_nuy Wrote: You're welcome. For the other institutions, they seem more 'digestible' to us, and I’ve managed to create some spreadsheets to help us better navigate our options. RE: Majoring in hospitality, tourism, or event management—any advice? - jg_nuy - 10-13-2024 To get a starting handle -- Start your TESU spreadsheet with just the General Education and Business Core - that will remove of the complexity - here is a quick Gen Ed and Business Core mapping to get your started: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sample_TESU_General_Education_Requirements_Roadmap https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sample_TESU_Business_Core_Roadmap Part A. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, but you've got this! Upon reviewing the Undergraduate Admissions requirements, I noticed that while it states, "Applicants must be at least 18 for admission to Thomas Edison State University. Applicants between 18 and 19 should review the steps listed on the Undergraduate Admissions page" - it appears that these specific steps are not clearly outlined or may be missing from the linked section. https://www.tesu.edu/admissions/apply.php#accordion-4daf2f34-e9f7-40e9-b51d-92efc07a72b7-0 |
