Prerequisite and credit transfer question - kblue6494 - 08-28-2024 Hello all, I'm in the process of satisfying general education requirements at a community college where I plan to take an AAS degree program. So far I have satisfied just about every GenEd requirement for the program except for two. The two remaining classes are Accounting I and Business Math. Here's the situation, to be able to enroll in those classes, I needed to pass an introductory algebra course, which I ultimately failed (the instructor was lousy and didn't seem interested in helping people understand the material). I'm also working towards an online, self-paced bachelor's degree at an out of state, regionally accredited university. I will be taking business math and accounting at that school instead of the community college. Once I complete those credits, I plan to transfer them to the community college. The community college said they will accept those credits as long as they're not ACE credits. Part of the reason I'm taking the remaining classes at the other school is to a) work towards the bachelor's degree and b) bypass the community college's introductory algebra prerequisite. Are there any problems I could run into when it's time for me to submit my application for the AAS program at the community college? I will have the business math and accounting credits transferred in long before the application deadline in November, however, I wonder if the F in introductory algebra will come back to haunt me? My only concern is them making me retake the algebra course before letting me move forward. In my mind, they shouldn't care about the failed algebra class if I complete the two other classes elsewhere. What's everyone's take on this? Just for clarification, the introductory algebra course is considered "developmental", meaning that it won't affect my GPA one way or another. RE: Prerequisite and credit transfer question - davewill - 08-28-2024 Only the advisors at the community college can tell you for sure. However, I would not expect the existing "F" to cause you problems, unless it brought your whole GPA below some minimum requirement. Edit: I now see that it is a developmental course and should not affect your GPA. Should be OK, then. Usually these kinds of prerequisite courses are because you can't pass the math test to enroll in freshman level courses. Since you're not trying to enroll in those courses, you should be fine. I just checked my transcript and my GPA is sitting at 4.0 (for the courses that count, not the developmental ones). RE: Prerequisite and credit transfer question - bjcheung77 - 08-29-2024 "I will be taking business math and accounting at that school instead of the community college." Are the classes you've registered for in the out of state institution going to be added to the transcript for the out of state institution? In other words, will those classes affect the GPA of the new school, not the community college? I ask because, if you're having issues with a community college developmental math class, it's going to be on-par (if not harder) with the class at the new school. Have you thought of ways to learn the material so you can pass? Have you thought of ways to learn the material so you can pass? No, it shouldn’t affect anything at the out of state school. My trasnscript has already been transferred over from the community college. The failed algebra class didn’t even show up on the transcript. The out of state school has a business math class which doesn’t have the algebra prerequisite. Basically I’m bypassing the community college’s prereq and jumping into business math. CC said they’ll accept the credits from the out of state university. Algebra isn’t required for the AAS, but business math is. The CC’s intro algebra course is more of a formality they have before they allow you to enroll in higher level math courses. |
