I remember when I took Introduction to Critical Reasoning at TESU. They encouraged us to discuss controversial topics on a forum. The idea was to present a valid argument.

To get people out of their comfort zones, professors should ask students where they lean, right or left, then give students a topic opposite to their beliefs and ask them to argue that topic.

As long as things are kept private online in a forum, students should feel safe.

Argue

To give reasons or cite evidence in support of an idea, action, or theory, typically with the aim of persuading others to share one's view.

Quarrel

An angry difference of opinion.

You want to argue a point of view without quarreling with someone, which often ends in personal attacks.
