Reasonably priced upper-division RA math courses - Ivo Lah - 06-17-2024

Hey, everyone. Recently came across what I think is a good deal and wanted to share.

Fayetteville State University in NC has a respectable number of math courses at a very affordable rate of $154.17 per credit (that's including fees). That's community college level prices--in fact, even better than the community colleges in my state. There is a catch, however; that price is if you are enrolled in a degree program through them. I don't know if you'd consider it unethical to apply for a math major there only to take a few courses and then "drop out" so you could use the courses you took to get a math degree through TESU, but it's an option.

If you don't want to do that, even at full price they are still quite affordable at $258.34 per credit. Obviously that's not Luna Community College level prices, but it's not easy to find RA math credits in courses like Complex Variables, Number Theory, Real Analysis, Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Topology, PDEs, two semesters of Abstract Algebra, etc. for potentially $462.27. (Or $274.77 if you live in North Carolina!). Looks to me like you could build a very respectable math BA at TESU at a very respectable price thanks to Fayetteville State.

Hopefully this helps a math major or two out there. There are some choices for UD/UL math courses (UND, UIUC, LSU, SNHU, etc.) but not too many compared to other subjects, and they tend to be a bit pricey by most of our standards, I think it's fair to say. In fact, from what I see FSU's online math major itself is very attractive for the right person, i.e. someone who isn't in a rush (very few UD math courses are offered on the 8-week half-semester system), and someone who likes a pretty extensive number of required electives courses (in math, computer science, and natural science) as part of their degree.

Thanks for the information. These courses are really appealing. I didn't see whether they are fully online or not. Where did you confirm that?

Besides, do you know whether they accept international students as well?

Dine does look like a potentially useful choice for lower-level (i.e. 200- and 100-level) courses, assuming they are fully online; all their calculus courses and above seem to be listed as blended. That does appear to mean they are synchronous and thus you'd have to be available for a Zoom call during class hours. A cursory glance makes it look like that's during work hours for most people, so probably not going to work for many, unfortunately. Can't beat the tuition at Native American colleges.

As far as Fayetteville State's upper-division mathematics and probability & statistics online offerings, I see that the following courses are offered either this upcoming fall, currently in the summer, or in the past:

The above are all listed as online, so I assume they are fully online. Fayetteville State specifically says their math major can be completed online, so at the very least they have to offer all of the require courses and enough electives to allow for that. I don't know about their policies towards international students, but I'd be surprised if they would have a discriminatory policy towards them.

This honestly might be the best math online math BS in North America based on the combination of course offerings and price. And they even accept alternative credits (mostly Straighterline and Saylor). I'd put it in Tier 1 with UND (which FSU blows out of the water on cost).
