Newbie Advice Needed BA. What CLEPs Can I Take? - kiick18 - 05-01-2024

Hello all,

I’m new to the forum so please excuse me if this is in the wrong place. I’m VERY new to all of this and I’m trying to do as much research as I can!

I decided to go back to school to get a BA in Psychology. I already have an AA in Liberal Arts. The school I am planning to go to is SUNY Empire (my union pays for it). All my credits will transfer over but I would like to earn more through CLEP before I officially enroll. I’m working full time so I’m trying to shorten my time.

My main question is does anyone have any suggestions on what CLEP exams I can or should take? I don’t want to take a CLEP exam and it would be a waste of time because I already earned credit through my AA. I pasted below all the classes I’ve taken during my AA run. If I can earn credits elsewhere as well I’ll be more than open to suggestions.

I'm sure others with offer more in-depth information on SUNY-Empire (as I'm not familiar with the school); as I know the SUNY system has been discussed a few times here. However, I wanted you to know that you can take the CLEP for Free through Modern States - https://modernstates.org/

SUNY Empire also takes ACE-approved credits as listed here:

And here's the corresponding CLEP info: https://sunyempire.edu/degree-planning-academic-review/degree-program/student-degree-planning-guide/standardized-exams/clep-scores-credit/

BTW, which community college did you go to, do you have more than 60 credits for transfer? Do you know the degree articulation transfer agreement if any and what classes goes where?

I suggest looking up the requirements for their particular degree plan, create a spreadsheet and place the CLEP and your CC credits into the spreadsheet, compare what is needed and what's left.

I went to CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College. I have exactly 62 Credits that are transferable. I'm not sure about the degree transfer agreement but I read they will accept about 90ish credits for transfer. I just don't wanna take CLEP exams blindly and it would be for nothing.

Thanks! Had not heard about this yet.
