Getting BA after Pierpont BOG AAS. - Faceparade - 04-26-2024

During COVID I finished a ton of courses and got my AAS from Pierpont. Now I’ve found myself in a position with a good amount of spare time and would like to pursue a BA. How should I go about transferring credits to one of the big 3 and find courses to finish the degree. Thanks!

Congrats on getting the Pierpont BOG AAS, it's a great start, you can ladder up to the UMPI degree options mentioned on the WIKI by following exactly that, there are multiple plans available depending on the degree you're looking for, from BA, BABA, BAS or BLS. Without knowing the info on the addendum and template, it's hard to say which one fits most. UMPI is your best choice, TESU is a good second option for max transfer if you have RA credits.

Thank you so much for setting me in the right direction. RA, regionally accredited?

RE: Getting BA after Pierpont BOG AAS. - rachel83az - 04-26-2024

RA is Regionally Accredited, yes. For example, if you managed to snag the ASU courses for $99 each back at the beginning of COVID, you might be a good fit for TESU.

Yes, both TESU and UMPI are RA, and they're public/state institutions, not the private for-profit ones that have RA. You're better off with these options than say, Excelsior, PUG, WGU, SNHU, etc unless there is a specific degree you're going for as these are perceived as exclusively online private non-profit institutions (which is much better than the for-profits like Capella, Strayer, U of Phoenix, Walden, etc).

I am pursuing a bachelors degree to open up new job possibilities with my current employer. I don't think the major matters much. I'm in healthcare and got my AAS to qualify for certification as a technician. Past this point in my career I'm just trying to add letters to the end of my name to open up possibilities in managment. I have about 8 hours a week I can dedicate to courses.

I was going over the GEC for UMPI and comparing what I have done. It seems like I have courses that cover all the objectives. Many of them are one class covered multiple objectives. Is that alright?

I’m missing a Lab. So I need 1 credit, I’m assuming I’ll so bio again with lab for that one credit.

Also I have 3 credits from a Japanese course. Will that count or should I just do the Spanish course.

Will my TEEX and the Computer based design courses qualify as “technical credits” so I can pursue the BAS?

Multiple objectives, yes... having said that, you still need enough credits to graduate. 1 Lab, 3 Japanese, 18 plus credits in electives doesn't meet the 120 total. You really have to create a spreadsheet and indicate if you're going for the UMPI BLS with a minor, you need to know what that minor is for people to picture where your credits go. Review the UMPI WIKI for degree plans and try to create a spreadsheet, save it to your google or one drive as a viewable (not editable) file, and link us to it. We can comment on recommendations then: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:UMPI | https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/University_of_Maine_at_Presque_Isle

Ok, I think I've done a good enough job with this spreadsheet.

BLS UMPI Plan 1.xlsx

In the Wiki, it says "Core Courses (most UL must be taken at UMPI)" but all the courses listed under that are from Sophia or study.com. I don't understand that.

Thank you so much for your help and patience.

RE: Getting BA after Pierpont BOG AAS. - Hotdogman1 - 05-23-2024

To graduate from UMPI, you need 30 credits hours (UMPI Residency Requirements) with most being upper level courses, meaning you can do 12 lower level credits (4 courses) and 18 upper level credit hours (6 courses). You could do 30 UL credit hours at UMPI if you want to, but LL courses tend to be easier and faster.
Formula 1: 12 LL credits + 18 UL credits = Easiest way to meet the required 30 UMPI credits for residency

You also need 24 credit hours of UL electives in total. If you transfer in 6+ UL credit hours, you will only be required to do 18 UL credit hours at UMPI since you will be at the required 24 UL credit hours to graduate. The 3 Sophia courses Business Law, Business Ethics, and Microbiology come into UMPI as UL credits. I'm not sure how your RA Business Ethics course would transfer since it's a 2 credit hour course but you might want to transfer in 2 of those Sophia courses just in case since I'm not sure UMPI has 4 credit hour UL courses.
Formula 2: 6 transferred UL credits + 18 UMPI UL credits = 24 total UL credits required for graduation.

You also missed US Government in 5E on the GEC.

I would recommend you complete at least these 4 courses on Sophia: US Government (3), Intro to Chemistry Lab (1), Business Law (3), and Microbiology (3).
Since you state you have 80 credits, these 4 classes would put you at the max 90 credit hours that you could transfer in. (I would do recommend doing some extra courses as I’m not familiar with some of the credits you are transferring in and transferring in only 90 credits seems risky. However, if you’re confident and checked the UMPI course equivalency database, go for it.)

Formula 1: 12 LL Credits (BUS 141, BUS 240, BUS 260, PCJ 215) + 18 UL Credits (BUS 321, BUS 415, Choose 2 more UL courses that you want to do.) = required 30 UMPI credits for residency + satisfies minor
Formula 2: 6 transferred UL credits (Sophia Business Law and Microbiology) + 18 UMPI UL credits (BUS 321, BUS 415, Choose 2 more UL courses that you want to do.) = 24 total UL credits

Wonderful thank you. I've updated it to reflect your suggestions. I'll get started with those Sophia courses now.
One hiccup, all of my science courses were taken at Straighterline. Looks like I need to order that from them for $69? Or just take the Sophia one and hope for the best that it transfers? I’d like to cut down how many sites I’m paying access to.

Also open to suggestions for two or maybe 3 of the easiest Sophia courses I haven't taken to make a little transfer buffer to make sure I get the full 90cr?
