what degree best complement a CS degree? - crowbird - 03-27-2024
For context i plan to get my degree early next year where i will be pretty much free full time(no school, no work, single no responsibilities).
So i plan to get a second degree and not sure what should i go for the two that seem viable are businesses or IT but IT i feel like ill just end up needing to spend more money to get all those needed certifications on top of all the fees(wgu us not an option as i am international)
Do to me being a third worlder by budget is tight (around 3k excluding 3rd credits and TOEFL..etc)
It seems my only option is umpi which would either be 1500 or 3000$ depending on how fast i go
Pug title looks fancy but i doubt ill be able to finish in 6 weeks with that 2500$ exceltrack price tag (maybe it is you guys let me know)
I plan to do a bachelor's because master seem to be to hard to finish in those short terms(ympi 2k for 8 weeks, pug 3.4k for 12 weeks) also i feel like a bachelor's would be more fulfilling online compared to a master where its more about lab experience and networking (correct me??) And it would be pain in the ass to get my cs degree from my third world country to transfer in order to do masters.

Yeah, I don't think anyone has finished PUG in a single term. The capstone is a separate, per credit, price, too.
When you say "third worlder", what country? Seeing as how you're posting right now, that suggests parts of Asia, Africa, or Europe.
The UMPI MAOL can be completed in 2 or 3 terms, assuming you do nothing else. But it helps if you have completed their Bachelor's level courses that count towards the Master's degree.

We usually recommend something like the UMPI Project Management or Management & Leadership to complement a CS degree.

@crowbird, Welcome to the board, this is a good initial post and update providing just the basic briefing of what you're looking for, having said that, you haven't provided us an overall picture of your scenario. You're in a great spot asking questions, but until you provide extra info asked for on the addendum and template, it's going to be really hard to provide you a concrete answer. Once you have a CS degree, adding IT to your resume won't do much. However, I suggest taking these Sophia courses to learn IT.
- Intro to IT
- Intro to Networking
- Intro to Web Development
- Intro to DB
- Intro to Python
Also, consider taking Google Certs through Coursera. You could also take the associate's Azure and AWS cloud certs.

You can't do the PUG in one term because the Capstone is on a fixed schedule, and you can't start it until you are almost done.
A business degree is a great complement to a CS degree. If you want to get into freelancing or entrepreneurship, I suggest a concentration in marketing. If you can put in 40-80 study hours per week, then getting done in one term at UMPI should be at least 50% likely.

It really depends on what you want to do with your career.
If you want to do IT, starting from a CS degree isn't a bad way to go, but you're better off with certs than springing for a whole IT degree. A business degree, even with an IS concentration has the benefit of actually adding a lot of knowledge that is separate from CS.
If you want to be a software dev in the business space, then the business degree should help. If you want to do something more technical; embedded development, AI, CyberSec, etc... then I'd save the effort for a master's or other professional education.

Just to confirm: I was told by PUG that students are not allowed to take the capstone in the first term. So two terms is a minimum -- and in my experience doable in that time with enough advance credits and hard work.
That said, I agree that adding an IT degree on top of a CS one isn't particularly useful and that certs in a specific part of IT you'd like to be in would be better.

Thanks for input and everyone who commented, couple more questions should i go for the masters in business or the bachelor?? Keep in mind my cs degree is a 3 year university degree equivalent to a bachelor's in the usa, but given my country status and university will it even be recognized also my transcripts for the degree are low (10/20 like pretty much the bare minimum to pass i dont what does that equate in a gpa system), and regarding umpi 8 weeks terms, if i want/plan to try to finish it in thos 8 weeks, do i have to commit to pay 1 or two terms from the start? Or i can just pay for one term and if i don't finish by then i pay for second and finish my degree??

One thing to note is all the PUG Masters degrees are going to 10-week terms in July, so it's more like 20 weeks/$5-$6k total as a minimum. Based on the one MBA course I took as part of my MSIT, I'd say it's doable in two terms -- albeit harder because there's few/no IT certs to help with completing requirements in advance.
