Non-Degree Enrollment - PreLawCoastie - 03-02-2024

Hey all,

I'm done with the requirements for my BA in Political Science at penn state world campus this semester, but want to raise my uGPA for law school admissions over the summer. My current plan was to take ASU online courses. I took several ULC courses, but those do not offer A+ grades, and the regular ASU online courses are $250/credit with military benefits. UMPI also offers A+'s, and would be much cheaper to grind for credits, but unfortunately I will have minimal free time when I transfer in June, and seem to have missed the deadline to apply for the semester starting in March. My GPA is currently around a 3.7, and will be a 3.8 after I retake two concurrent enrollment classes from High School at BYU-I.

Looking at the yourpace website, it looks like they have a non-degree option, but I can't apply for it - the form on that page never led to a response. Does anyone have any experience with enrolling as a non-degree student, or a way around the deadline?

I also go to Penn State and I thought transfer credits do NOT affect your cumulative GPA. I've transferred courses over and my GPA has remained the same

Hi!! You’re right, it doesn’t effect your Penn state gpa, but when you apply for law school the LSAC calculates your gpa separately.

UPDATE:

Eventually (several weeks later.) I was contacted by UMPI and able to just... add classes by emailing someone random! A bunch of my mainestreet stuff was broken, too, but  a few trouble tickets later and yes, you can take THREE classes simulatenously for the same price and skip the long transfer process.

Enrolling in classes to get my GPA up, currently looking at POS 101, Marxism, and Hist of Infectious disease. Any reccomendations for a bookish social sciency person for quick easy A classes?

Let me know if you have any questions!

My only other suggestion is HTY Vietnam Wars. It's about like HTY 489 Infectious Disease as far as structure, milestones and final. Good luck!

Hello! I'm curious what the tuition is and if you had to submit any previous transcripts? I did see it is a max of 3 courses. Thank you!

Tuition is $1700 for the term. You also have to apply and submit your transcripts.

I was asking in reference to a non degree application. Not a degree seekng student.
Thank you!

A+ grades are a battle. You can get a 4/4 on your final, but when grades post it shows as an A.

UMPI's YP program isn't really designed for non-degree seeking students. Non-degree seeking students are typically those who have had issues in the past with a low GPA. You'd still have to apply and send your transcripts. Below is from the UMPI catalog and it is about on campus students, but it may give you an idea that yes you need to apply and send transcripts.

Non-Degree Admission
UMPI is committed also to serving the educational interests and aspirations of academically qualified individuals interested in taking courses for personal enrichment, job advancement, and expanded awareness.
Non-matriculated study is arranged through the Registrar’s Office in Preble Hall.
Enrollment in credit-bearing courses requires a high school diploma or its equivalent, and evidence of such may be required. The University may require additional evidence that the non-matriculated student is qualified to study at the 200 level and above. Permission to study full-time (12 or more hours in a semester) in a non-matriculated status may be granted in exceptional cases.
