Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - LevelUP - 12-22-2023 Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses https://www.ocregister.com/2023/12/22/generative-ai-is-a-big-problem-in-college-campuses/ We live in a world where intelligence is becoming a commodity. Colleges need to find different ways to teach and measure student skills. RE: Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - posabsolute - 12-23-2023 Generative AI is kinda crazy, I used it every day at work. I think nobody really knows where this is gonna go, the next 5 to 10 years could be rocky. We are just getting started with this, many large investments started this year, and so probably innovation in this space will go much faster from here. RE: Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - nykorn - 12-31-2023 It's rampant among the students at the college I'm at and what's more, even some teachers are using it to generate feedback on student assignments. That's not all - students are successfully submitting stuff like recordings of presentations, where they have an AI animated version of their head talking, and AI samples of their voice turned into a text to speech voice - all so that they don't actually have to record themselves saying a presentation! (the students claim it is "accessibility" for people with "anxiety problems", trying to cover up the fact that there is no way for the teacher to tell if the student themselves did any of the work or not, and a presentation is normally partially judged on presentation skills, not just the content) I agree that most of the time, stuff like essays and powerpoints are just a gathering and summary of facts or other people's work and do not really prove knowledge in the subject. Tests and homework can always be cheated on. You can graduate from a whole degree and still not know anything - either because you didn't do the reading/assignments or because the degree curriculum itself was bad it didn't prepare you for the field. The only way to really stop a lot of this may be to require people to take classes in person, do their assignments live in class without technology, make assignments more hands-on, handwrite their essays, etc - however I really don't see that happening. RE: Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - MrPanda - 12-31-2023 I took a "Use of ChatGPT in education" course in the university where I´m working (even when it was intended for Information Systems professionals)... and there they told them how to use ChatGPT to create quizzes, and what nykorn said: how to give feedback to the students. So they said that they were doing it in order to save time and be able to give "high quality and customized feedback to each student in a very short time, so they don´t lose interest in the course". In summary: the teachers create the questions in ChatGPT, the students use ChatGPT to answer them, and the teachers use ChatGPT to grade them and give feedback. Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - Darknigh7 - 12-31-2023 Don't forget the proctors who use generative AI "checkers" that don't work to accuse innocent kids of cheating because the website said AI DETECTED in red scary text. Sent from my SM-S918U using Tapatalk RE: Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - posabsolute - 12-31-2023 Oh my god, everything in this thread sounds crazy, so basically, chatGPT is answering its own quizzes, provides notes on its own papers, and students generate an AI to do their presentation half generated with chatGPT... RE: Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - fmsoa - 12-31-2023 Basically the whole college industry is a joke and a scam. Nobody from providers to consumers is doing honest work out of their own. Yet billions of dollars from the government to student tuitions fund this scam everyday RE: Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - lynnii2 - 12-31-2023 The entire education system in the United States is flawed. The reason why is because the way school is taught to pass test with multiple choice exams. We are not really learning anything at all. I have kids from 16 yrs old to 7 yes old and I can tell you every few year they change up how math, english, science is done and the kids are confused just as they learned how to do it the way they want it done. My kids are not really learning and I live in a upper middle class area and with great schools in my district. My wife and i have my kids read book, write book reports and etc... My wife went to school to be an English Teacher and once she stared doing internships and substitute teaching she didn't like how the school system is setup. She is in a different line of work now. They want all the kids to work as an individual, but in real life everything we do is done as a group and team work. No one person has the answer to everything and for some reason outside of the US school system we all rely on eachoiter to complete task no matter the job we do. The kids are punish for asking for help and not learning like robots. At this particular university, most of the business classes don´t have exams, it´s all assignments + presentations. All the work is done in groups, so there´s a lot of space for people passing not knowing most of the topics. The personal grade is just 20% + 80% in the group works. RE: Generative AI is a big problem in college campuses - posabsolute - 01-01-2024 I woudn't go as far as saying the entire college industry is a scam; Atleast it doesn't reflect my experience. I think the courses I took at TESU & WGU were actually pretty good, especially the business classes, and closed book exams + writing business cases were a good way to test out knowledge. That being said, now with chatGPT, you could probably copy-paste the entire business case and have it write papers for you; at least, we are not too far from that. Any market that gets disrupted needs time to adapt, and so it's probably gonna take us a couple of years to figure out this one and what it means for education. |
