Second bachelors pacing and options - Junco - 12-15-2023 Hello all! As always, I am confused about pacing and options at UMPI. I have finished my bachelor's and awaiting conferral. I will start the MAOL in the Spring II term (March) because they require students to wait a term so they can get the degree conferred. I really enjoyed the history courses at UMPI and thought I'd perhaps go back and do a bachelor's in history. I could probably churn out 30 units during Spring 1, or I could do 15 units during Spring 1, then complete the MAOL, and then finish the history degree later. Here is my question: while I am waiting to start the MAOL in Spring II, would I be allowed to attend Spring I just to work on the history program? I have a feeling the answer is no. I've emailed Jessica just in case, but I thought I'd see what this group thinks. My #1 priority is starting the MAOL as soon as possible, so I don't want to do anything like delaying the conferral of my degree for a term while I complete a second bachelor's. I need to get the degree conferred so I can do the MAOL. Thanks! RE: Second bachelors pacing and options - bjcheung77 - 12-16-2023 Hmm, I would do things a little differently, take the BA History or whatever you're looking at as the second degree. If you have the energy to complete that in a session, great, if not, then two sessions. You can add the 3-4 classes that can exempt you from 3 classes at UMPI MAOL, then try to complete the MAOL within another session or two. By dropping the classes from 12 to 9, you have a higher chance of finishing faster... These are the four classes that can transfer and be exempt, you need to do 3 of the 4: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-10-courses-in-10-days?pid=400861#pid400861 RE: Second bachelors pacing and options - Duneranger - 12-16-2023 (12-15-2023, 09:54 PM)Junco Wrote: Hello all! Keep in mind the non-Dr Z history classes (most of them) take much longer. I think people get lulled into thinking the rest of the major is the same. So if you are trying to squeeze things in you might be pretty stressed. The other history prof requires much more reading and in depth papers as well. I just finished the history degrees in one term as a FYI. About 55k words written... I have a history MA and I was even sort of burned out by the end. You might be riding high after finishing your first BA, but how about you just take some time to relax and prep for the MAOL? Grad school is a bit of a different animal. Betting multiple BAs from the same uni is sort of pointless as well unless its a double major or something RE: Second bachelors pacing and options - ss20ts - 12-16-2023 I'd skip the BA in History. Just stick to your plan for the MAOL. A bachelor's degree doesn't mean much once you have a master's. You do not want to get burnt out trying to cram the history degree into 1 term then immediately start the MAOL. I have seen many people burnout cramming their degree into 1 term. I've seen a few then go onto the MAOL and drop out. They just can't do it as they have nothing left. They need a break to recover. Enjoy the holidays and get some rest. You'll need it to get through the MAOL quickly. Keep in mind your end goal! RE: Second bachelors pacing and options - bjcheung77 - 12-16-2023 The MAOL should remain as your #1 priority, but if you can wait a session to complete any other things you're interested in, I don't see the need to rush to start... Even if you take 2 sessions to complete the MAOL, you'll still be able to complete both the BA and the MAOL in 2024.
