Straighterline Exams - defscarlett - 08-15-2023 I've taken several courses through Straighterline in the past and with a new degree option I'm researching I need different science credits than what I currently have and wanted to knock them out through SL. Are their final exams still open book or have they moved to closed book exams? RE: Straighterline Exams - Jonathan Whatley - 08-15-2023 It varies by course. It's laid out on StraighterLine's page Exam Proctoring Details by Course. RE: Straighterline Exams - bjcheung77 - 08-15-2023 Depending on your needs, I would skip them in favor of Sophia.org and their current options, if they don't carry the course, then Study.com may have the science and lab you're looking at. If finally you're looking at some course that's not offered by either, such as BioChem or Organic Chem, you can decide on StraighterLine then... RE: Straighterline Exams - defscarlett - 08-15-2023 I need Chemistry 1, Biology 1 and Physics 1 (08-15-2023, 12:05 PM)bjcheung77 Wrote: Depending on your needs, I would skip them in favor of Sophia.org and their current options, if they don't carry the course, then Study.com may have the science and lab you're looking at. Why would Study.com be favorable to SL, considering the price difference and both a proctored? RE: Straighterline Exams - bjcheung77 - 08-15-2023 Again, it depends on the person and the institution they intend to transfer the courses into, I don't know your intended degree, program, school and if they accept these as exact/workable equivalents. But the reason is as follows... cost, ease, speed, and less 'physical junk' for labs (if any). StraighterLine, $99/month, $79/course x 3, $69/lab, plus your lab kits x 3 (let's say $200 each?). 99+ 207 + 237 + 600. Total is $1143 Mind you, StraighterLine still uses ProctorU, I have taken 30+/over 100 credits through them, I don't mind ProctorU, but some do. Study.com, $200/2 exams, $70/extra exam. Labster a virtual labe and it is $69/course I think. Even if you do pay that for 3 different courses, you'll get $207. Total will be $477 flat, no shipping/handling fee for virtual labs either. Note, Study.com may not have a lab for Physics, I haven't taken any lab courses through Study.com (yet). Oh, if Sophia.org carries Physics, you're already good at a whopping $99/month for all 3 classes combined... they also use Labster and it's included in the membership! RE: Straighterline Exams - dfrecore - 08-15-2023 I would first find out if the school you want to go to will take Sophia and/or Study.com. Then you need to find out if they'll take specific courses from Sophia and SDC. Sophia has: - Chem I + Chem Lab - Human Bio + Human Bio Lab (not necessarily the same as Bio 1) you could do all of these in a single month for $99 SDC has: Intro to Biology w/Lab (4cr course) General Chemistry w/o Lab Chemistry I w/Lab Chemistry II w/Lab Intro to Physics Physics I w/o lab Physics II w/o lab $235/mo, includes 2 courses (anything with a lab is 1 course; and the virtual labs are an additional price) RE: Straighterline Exams - defscarlett - 08-15-2023 Columbia Southern University is the transfer location. They have an articulation agreement with Sophia, but only Chem will transfer to meet the requirement. They've accepted all of my other SL courses at face value, but I'm still awaiting confirmation on specifically if these courses will qualify. I haven't looked into Study.com outside of price and course list and did see them there. Also I don't believe I need labs, as they're only requiring 3CR per course. These courses are to meet gen ed requirements for bachelor's in occupational health and safety If Sophia had the other 2 classes I needed, I would happily take their non proctored courses. But want to make the most of my money with these subscription fees and I'm already paying a subscription fee for straighterline to finish some courses I started but never finished years ago to meet some additional requirements. I haven't done science for 20 years, so this will be a struggle. I used The Science of Disasters at TESU to meet the 3 credit requirement I needed, which was primarily weather and geology. This is going to suck, just trying to find the easiest/cheapest option RE: Straighterline Exams - bjcheung77 - 08-15-2023 Basically, you have an Associates, a Bachelors... You really need to compare the BS with their MS option to see which one is better for you... due to cost, number of credits, etc. Their MS Occupational Health & Safety is an option if you need the same number of credits, having the MS trumps the BS any day of the week, again, compare the requirements: https://www.columbiasouthern.edu/online-degree/view-all-programs/masters/ms-osh/ RE: Straighterline Exams - defscarlett - 08-15-2023 (08-15-2023, 02:54 PM)bjcheung77 Wrote: Basically, you have an Associates, a Bachelors... RE: Straighterline Exams - dfrecore - 08-16-2023 I'd prob ask them if the Sophia courses will work. |
