ASU Universal Learner experience? - Kones - 12-22-2022

I'm working on creating a potential degree plan for a TESU BSBA in Accounting/CIS. I'm already settled on the accounting part, the CIS is just a thought at the moment. However, I'm not really interested in CIS as a subject. The only reason I'm considering it is because I saw ASU's certificate of Business Data Analytics and found it very intriguing. All of the courses in the program have a CIS code, so that's what triggered me to consider adding a CIS concentration. I currently work as an analyst in an accounting department (in NJ), so this would be much more up my alley than traditional CIS and would apply to both my current knowledge and skills, as well as ones I would like to develop. I understand ASU courses would make my degree more expensive, but I may be willing to make it work. I wouldn't necessarily go for the entire certification (6 courses), but maybe 3 of them. Would be really interested in hearing of any experiences anyone has had with ASU and how TESU handled them. If anyone has any specific feedback on ASU's CIS 308: Advanced Excel in Business, CIS 310: Business Data Visualization or CIS 405: Business Intelligence, that would be especially helpful!

Your Location: NJ
Your Age: 40's
What kind of degree do you want?: Accounting mostly, possibly add a CIS concentration
Current Regional Accredited Credits: None. Went to the now defunct Katharine Gibbs back in the day, but they lost accreditation years ago
Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: Just resuming a journey I attempted (and failed at) years ago, so not much
Sophia: Intro to Psychology (the old one), US history I, almost done with US History II
Saylor (maybe): Principles of Marketing, Intro to Business Law and Ethics (I may have lost these to the ACE-Credly transfer. I earned them years ago and am having trouble obtaining a badge for them. waiting to hear back from them to see if they can still be used.
Any certifications or military experience? No

Just an FYI, just because one school considers a course CIS (or anything else) does not mean the next school will bring a course in that way. I think TESU will not bring the Excel course in as a business course, it will be a free elective. Not 100%, but it's what I've seen on many evals for them, with many other Excel courses.

But, I think that accounting and CIS can be a great fit, and can lead to an interesting career path.

Thanks! Will definitely have to look into it. The wiki does show ASU Excel transferring in as CIS-399 Special Topics Comp Info Systems, but not sure how accurate it is. I don't see a lot of threads about ASU. But if I do decide to go this route, I'll be sure and post about my experience.

I haven't taken CIS308 yet, however some of the courses you mentioned fulfill the CIS Electives section. I attached screenshots of the relevant portions of the last evaluation I got from TESU just two days ago.

IIRC, the Excel course works for the CIS degree at TESU, but NOT the Comp Sci degree.

Thank you so much! I didn't realize this thread existed. It's tough to search for "ASU" given the search requirements of more than 3 characters. Really appreciate the insight in that thread.

RE: ASU Universal Learner experience? - Kones - 12-22-2022

I just realized that both CIS-308 and CIS-310 may come into TESU as CIS-399, so a dupe. That stinks. I may still be inclined to just take one of them and replace the missing course with a Study.com something or other.

RE: ASU Universal Learner experience? - rachel83az - 12-23-2022

199, 299, 399, and 499 are "catch all" class numbers at TESU. They don't necessarily duplicate one another. You can have multiple CIS-399 classes on your transcript, for instance, and they could all count for credit. This is in contrast to every single other class number that they offer. If you took MAT-140 4x, you'd only get 3 credits, but if you have CIS-399 listed 4x, that should be 12 credits.

Thanks, this is great news! My accounting only plan had me using mainly TECEPs for RA credit, but when I discovered the ASU program I started to redo it to utilize 3 ASU courses for RA credit. I thought I was going to have to go back again to replace the dupe with a TECEP. But it’s sounding more and more like Acct/CIS may be the route I take.

Updating this thread to share my experience with transferring in ASU credits. While previous posters have had ASU's CIS classes transfer in with a CIS code and meet requirements for the BSBA CIS AOS, unfortunately, mine were transferred in with DSI and SES codes and put into my electives. I'm pretty disappointed because I took 3 of them and they were $425 a piece. Now I have to find two more CIS courses to meet the requirements. The only plus is that I was able to grab two free TECEPs that I ordinarily would have taken as TESU courses (I have tuition reimbursement) so that frees up some funds for other classes. But man, I thought my CIS AOS would be complete by now  Sad.

Not sure if anyone has had a similar experience recently, just wanted to call it out in case the wiki needs an update.
