Question about DSST - CarlDeb - 06-09-2008
Hi all,
This may be another one of my silly questions, but please bear with me because if I knew the answer, I wouldn't ask!!
Is DSST testing or Dantes testing (I'm assuming they are the same thing) only for past and present military personnel and DOD personnel or can anyone take them if the college they are going to will accept the credits?

Hi Deb,
Civilians can take Dantes/DSST exams. You just can't take them on a military base, as far as I know. You need to find a test center that provides Dantes testing in your area.

Hi Deb,
I am a civilian and have taken two Dantes tests, one at a local college and one at the local AF Base. It's easier to take it at a local college because of the hassle of getting on base; however the local base was cheaper because you only had to pay for the cost of the test. At the college I had to pay an additional fee to the college because I wasn't a student there. You can look on the Dantes web site and they list the colleges in your area that provide the tests.

DANTES stands for Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support. It's a Department of Defense program that comprises a whole range of things, including certification programs, tuition assistance, distance learning programs... and the DANTES Subject Standardized Tests, or DSSTs. So it's probably better to call them DSSTs, but saying "DANTES tests" certainly isn't wrong. They've been open to the civilian public for quite some time now -- I don't know exactly how long. You can visit DSST - GetCollegeCredit.com to find out more about the program, and find a local testing center. I strongly advise that you try to find an Internet-based testing center near you. Taking the paper-and-pencil exams means having to wait for your scores -- too much stress for me.
