Musk getting rid of 75% of Twitter staff - bjcheung77 - 10-20-2022

Hmm, I know they are going to cut staff, but didn't know it was this drastic... So drastic, laying off 75% or about 5.5K staff out of roughly 7.5K total.  Link: Elon Musk Plans to Lay Off Nearly 75% of Twitter Employees, or 5,500 Staffers (Report) (yahoo.com)

As I understand, Elon wants Twitter to be the "everything app" like China's WeChat.

Elon also likes Tiktok and would like Twitter to offer those types of videos.

So whoever they fire, they shouldn't fire any of the software engineers.

Trying to be it all defeats the whole point of the platform. They're going to have the same problem as Instagram is having in trying to copy TikTok with Reels -- the existing user base will hate the change in direction and they'll fall off, and they younger generation will think it's tacky and it won't attract them as new users (similar to Facebook).

Twitter employees circulate open letter, listing their “demands”, to @elonmusk as he prepares to take over

That's a long list of demands for people who have no say in any of this - and it's not a public company, so Elon Musk gets to make 100% of the decisions.  I'd say that anyone who demands something is automatically out the door. That minute. Without so much as a 2-week package. Adios.

Long list? The demands are literally just four items: Respect, Safety, Protection, and Dignity. Anyone NOT demanding these things of their employer must have no self respect at all.

There are people without which a business will suffer. If a new owner could control their ego, they would focus on documentation before the axe.

Respect: We demand leadership to respect the platform and the workers who maintain it by committing to preserving the current headcount. This is ridiculous, and it's not anything to do with respect.  Of course that's not going to happen.  But, the flip side of the no guaranteed jobs for anyone is that he can't make you stay, so feel free to leave.

Safety: We demand that leadership does not discriminate against workers on the basis of their race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or political beliefs.  We also demand safety for workers on visas, who will be forced to leave the country they work in if they are laid off. Again, this is not safety, and it's asking for guaranteed jobs for non-citizens.  Sorry, but you took a chance coming here, and there are no guarantees.  I don't wish bad things on these people, but making these sorts of demands to your boss is not the way to get them on your side and wanting to help you.

Protection: We demand Elon Musk explicitly commit to preserve our benefits, those both listed in the merger agreement and not (e.g. remote work).  We demand leadership to establish and ensure fair severance policies for all workers before and after any change in leadership. You don't get to demand protection of your job, guaranteed remote work, and "fair" severance policies.  They're not a law.  But again, you are free to go find a better job, at a company that you feel will give you protection.

Dignity: We demand transparent, prompt, and thoughtful communication around our working conditions.  We demand to be treated with dignity, and to not be treated as mere pawns in a game played by billionaires.

They sound like spoiled children, with a lot of demands, and absolutely no talk of what they will give in return.  If my kids came to me with these DEMANDS, I'd kick their asses out (they're 18 & 20 and graduated from HS and work full time).  It's my house, and you don't get to demand anything.  Now, if you'd like to work on some MUTUAL respect, I'm happy to discuss things.  But when you start listing your demands, it's over. Goodbye.

Elon would be dumb to fire any computer engineers, but those people would be fine as any company would quickly hire them.

Some of these SJW people with their SJW degrees are unemployable.

I don't know if you all heard the story about the Lesbian Bar in Portland.

But the employees at that lesiban bar revolted against the owner saying:
1. The bar owner made racist remarks.
2. The bar was transphobic by not allowing trans people in the bar.
3. The owner was culturally appropriating artwork.
4. The workers wanted SJW classes to be taught inside the bar. (No, the bar is not a school)
5. A list of demands was made to the bar owner in which the workers DEMANDED FULL OWNERSHIP OF THE BAR.

All this happened after only 1 day of opening the bar!!!

The next day the bar closed and never reopened.

With these SJW's their thinking is flawed. They ONLY care about themselves and NEVER about the team. Put them together in a working environment where they have to work together, and they collapse.

Sound like just the kind of people I'd want on my team  Rolleyes

That said, I imagine the bulk of Twitter employees are decent and reasonable people. Maybe.
