NSLS - National society of leadership and success - Sara143 - 09-28-2022 I received email from UMPI. It’s about getting scholarships and other benefits. The opportunity is only available to select students based on academic performance and leadership potential confirmed by UMPI. Is there someone else who got similar email? Thanks RE: NSLS - National society of leadership and success - bjcheung77 - 09-28-2022 Oh hey, if you have more info, could you copy/paste that email (without any personal details), just the body of the email. I wonder if it is available for Your Pace students or just a selective group of students as you mentioned. It's really interesting, I wonder what it says now... RE: NSLS - National society of leadership and success - ss20ts - 09-29-2022 Everyone above a certain grade point gets invited to this. It's offered through many schools. It's not a YourPace thing. Don't get excited about the offer of scholarships. Everyone doesn't get one. It's $95 to join the lowest tier membership. It's interesting you mentioned this, the first thing that popped into my thought was... They're using the membership fees to pay for one or a few of these scholarships. Since not everyone will get the scholarship, they have to "get some cash flow ready" to get the qualified applicants and the number of scholarships available set. It's another option other than having a "donate/gift" page like some universities have... This society isn't an UMPI thing. It's a national thing. The scholarships are through the society not UMPI. This is not a donate/gift thing to a university. Nothing like that at all. https://www.nsls.org/ RE: NSLS - National society of leadership and success - Sara143 - 10-13-2022 I talked with Jessica and she said online students could still participate. I am not interested since I have to pay $95 it’s not free. I am not interested since I have to pay $95 it’s not free. If you were invited, you were eligible. It isn't an on campus thing. It's a national society. Schools all over the country offer it. WGU has it and they're 100% online. RE: NSLS - National society of leadership and success - nykorn - 01-26-2025 I got an invite Email on Friday (saw it today on Sunday). It was sent straight to my WGU school Email, which I don't give out to random places. My 2nd term at WGU ends in a month from now and I have been in good standing. Someone online states invitations are usually sent out every January and August. Several college students immediately contacted their advisors upon getting the Email, at which point their advisors told them it's legit. The Email I got states: Quote:Title: You Are Invited to Join the NSLS Honor Society Bill Nye the Science Guy is in their video!! So is Obama and George W. Bush. Their FAQ says in order to get in you must be nominated by a school faculty member, then the head of your local (school) chapter must approve the nomination. From reading online, you have to pay over $95 to get "in", then pay more if you want any certificates. I'm not sure about this and am trying to do more research online about it. I'm not a bad student but I've gone to several colleges and universities and I've never been invited to this kind of club before. There are mixed reviews on if it's worth it or not, most saying it's not however most talking about it also haven't joined it in the first place. One person supposedly impressed a hiring manager with it. Quite a few people said they joined as personal motivation to keep up their studies and it really helped them at the time since their grades or motivation had started to slip. Most of their supposed "deep discounts for members" available as a preview are discounts you can get from anywhere even without being a member of anything, or even just for playing some online games. Example: 40% off your first Hello Fresh order. There are no discounts advertised on their main page I could use - I don't even have any of the cinema chains anywhere near me. Their personalized letter of recommendation, according to one comment, is automatic and can be saved as a PDF or printed out as soon as you pay the fee. I haven't gotten the physical invitation in the mail yet. There is definitely some shady stuff going on with this, but my relatives think it sounds legit and par for the course. According to this article, chapter heads try to recruit people because chapters have dues to pay that can be over $2,000 and with each new person they recruit they get a $5 to $10 credit towards their annual dues! Some guy on Quora says: Quote:After completing all the Executive and Advanced classes, I was able to give the transcript to my university (the University of Central Oklahoma) and the courses counted for 9 credit hours towards my degree electives. This was a huge deal at the end of my college journey, as I was able to take my final capstone in the summer and receive my degree without another semester of schooling. I did accept the special discount for paying for the Advanced and Executive classes right when I enrolled in the NSLS otherwise it would have been a lot more money.... The classes do take some time to complete. They give you like 2 1/2 years to finish all of them... the main reason, and most importantly for most people, I believe, is the possibility to turn your work into college credit. Their courses are recommended for credit by American Council on Education (ACE) and the National College Credit Recommendation Service (NCCRS). I'm in a Masters, so I have no electives. And Sophia would be cheaper. There are some other comments saying it is a mixed bag depending on where you live. Supposedly if your local chapter gets you access to roles like social media manager, treasurer or other stuff it can be worth it to have that volunteer experience. A LOT of the comments regarding this club in general were either written by robots or are just a summary of whatever they read in the above person's writing. Regardless of if they thought it was worth it or not, it is looking hard to find credible looking people who have actually tried to join it. Here is one lady's experience of it, with a lot of detail on how it gave her confidence RE: NSLS - National society of leadership and success - nykorn - 01-27-2025 I found WGU's official page on this: https://www.wgu.edu/lp/programs/nsls.html They link to a video done by WGU on it WGU says: "Official recognition: Showcase your membership in NSLS on your résumé, LinkedIn profile, and academic transcripts to demonstrate your commitment to leadership and academic excellence." You also "receive a complimentary graduation cord from the WGU NSLS Chapter". It shows up on our transcripts?! Not that anyone ever looks at my transcripts, but they may have just sold me. Ok, I admit, it was really Bill Nye in the welcome video who sold me LOL. Give me time to think about this. I graduated with honors at my high school and received one of those golden cord things at the awards ceremony, I had no idea what it meant and thought they gave them to everyone. I'm pretty sure I was going to throw them in the trash when my dad took them from me. I remember it looked like something bought at a dollar store. Can't believe I'm only finding out they're special now when I'm in my 30's. RE: NSLS - National society of leadership and success - nykorn - 01-27-2025 Well I decided to just go for it. It actually looks like it or something I do connected with it could look pretty good on my resume. If I understand their invitation right, they nominated me towards a President role which is essentially teaching, networking and leading meetings. I'll go through all the training and then report back and tell you guys how it went. Supposedly the training will take a few months. They partner with True Nature Education to get you a slight discount on international trips. The currently listed trips specifically for NSHS are to - Delphi Valley, Ireland ($2995) - Tuscany, Italy ($2695) - Acred Valley, Peru ($2,995) I'm majoring in Education and getting my teaching license. Surprisingly enough the trips are marketed towards teachers! The trips include - Lodging, 3 meals - Teaching English in local schools - Participating in traditional ceremonies and indigenous cultural activities - Participating in eco-friendly activities such as reforestation activities - Hiking, rowing and survival skills like making rafts - (for Italy) truffle hunting, farming, canoeing (for Ireland) bogging, archery... You could simply go on a trip to these places for about half the cost as this package deal, but that wouldn't include the cost of activities. Except... I think... airfare is not included in the package cost. Hm. I am going to actually go and calculate the cost of doing all this yourself and then report back. |
