Online UL Music courses - eminor7 - 07-03-2022

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of any sources for online UL music courses? There are quite a few on Jazz, American Music, and Pop, but I was hoping to find some topics other than those. I know of the 2 Coopersmith music courses. The music therapy course has not been released yet.

Thanks in advance.

Not necessarily cheap, but check out this page: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Obscure_Credits

This is not cheap, but it is self-paced from CSU-Pueblo Independent Study. The cost is: $215 per credit hour = $645 for a 3-credit course.

If you're very familiar with various musical instruments or the music industry and the background/history, you may want to PLA the upper level requirements for some courses, it's worth a shot instead of taking a course... depending on which institution you're going to though, it may be cheaper, easier, faster as well.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I have taken World Music (LL).  If I take the CSU Pueblo Intro to World Music and transferred both to TESU, will TESU accept both or choose one over the other? My other question is how do PLAs work? Do they involve lots of writing?

TESU policy on duplication of credit (if both classes transfer in as the same equivalency): https://tesu.smartcatalogiq.com/en/Current/Undergraduate-Catalog/University-Policies-and-Procedures/Undergraduate-Academic-Policies/Degree-Policies/Duplication-of-Credit

Information on PLA at TESU: https://www.tesu.edu/degree-completion/pla-100-and-pla-200

Since one course is LL and one is UL, TESU will take both (they will give them different course numbers, so there's no duplication).

TESU's PLA process is very involved and a lot of work.

Thank you @carrythenothing and @dfrecore. It's a relief to know that it won't be a duplication. But I still need a few more courses, therefore I am open to any other suggestions on the courses. I appreciate all the input!

PLA is great for hard to find upper level requirements, it's just that Music isn't a course available at the Big 3, so this is a very good option to get credits, although there will be lots of documentation you need to do, I think it's worth the energy, money, time... Here's a quick comparison of the Big 3 PLA (a year and a half ago) Link: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-PLA-at-the-Big-3-Compared

This is very specific (and not cheap), so it probably will not apply to you. But if you are a pianist, BYU Independent Study offers up to 19 hours of upper level credit in Organ Performance. There is a catch that you must have access to a qualified private organ teacher. Level one starts for those with piano but no organ experience. You can progress through the levels for college credit, but I am not sure why all the courses have the same designation, "MUSIC 399R."

Organ Performance: Level 4
MUSIC 399R | University | 3.00 Credit Hours | $654.00
Organ Performance: Level 5
MUSIC 399R | University | 4.00 Credit Hours | $872.00
Organ Performance: Level 2
MUSIC 399R | University | 2.00 Credit Hours | $436.00
Organ Performance: Level 1
MUSIC 399R | University | 2.00 Credit Hours | $436.00
Organ Performance: Level 6
MUSIC 399R | University | 5.00 Credit Hours | $1,090.00
Organ Performance: Level 3
MUSIC 399R | University | 3.00 Credit Hours | $654.00
