Comparing Consumer in USA vs Mexico - Kal Di - 04-26-2022 Historically, the USA was known for having the best consumer freedoms in the Americas. Well, what about now? RE: Comparing Consumer in USA vs Mexico - LevelUP - 04-26-2022 A tax on food that contains sugar would hit poor people the most. They are worried about people eating too much sugar, yet walk by a bunch of homeless people in tents shooting up heroin/Fentanyl and smoking crack openly in the streets. To me, it's just another excuse to tax people and slowly take away our freedoms. RE: Comparing Consumer in USA vs Mexico - rachel83az - 04-26-2022 A tax on sugar also harms people who cannot have artificial sweeteners for whatever reason. Sugar is taxed in the UK. I know people with PKU who would die if they moved to the UK, due to all the aspartame used there. I don't know how British people with PKU live. Not well, I would assume. Nutrition is also a very flawed science, and information is constantly changing. Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin release. The only positive thing about artificial sweeteners is that they don't add calories. At first, it was believed that those who drank diet sodas weighed more because these were people trying to lose weight. However, rat studies found that consuming artificial sweeteners caused rats to consume more calories. Insulin is released upon consumption of artificial sweeteners because the tongue tastes something sweet, and the body thinks it is consuming sugar. When the body realizes that sugar was not consumed, people start craving sugar. Therefore, it's believed that those who drink diet sodas are consuming more carbohydrates via solid foods because of cravings. There's also not a direct relationship between sugar consumption and developing type 2 diabetes. I, personally, have a bad reaction to foods that contain a large amount of sugar alcohol. I've also had bad reactions to glucose and fructose substitutes, such as allulose. That's a good point. Things would taste funny if we got rid of all sugar. Imagine how spaghetti/pizza sauce would taste. Gatorade based on "science" supposedly contains lots of sugar in it though around 1/2 of soda. This is used by athletes. The question is who decides how much sugar is too much? I don't trust the government to decide that. A while back, Mike Bloomberg tried to ban large soda before it was overturned by the courts https://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/a30999936/new-york-bloomberg-soda-ban RE: Comparing Consumer in USA vs Mexico - rachel83az - 04-26-2022 Spaghetti/pizza sauce without added sugars actually tastes better, IMO! But, yeah, after the whole food pyramid debacle, I don't trust the US government to NOT let nutrition advice be doled out by food industry lobbiests. I don't add sugar to my sauce when I make it. I actually don't like it with sugar or sweeteners. Imagine how spaghetti/pizza sauce would taste. I only do it if the tomatoes/tomato sauce are really, really bad. (Tart/acidic/unripe.) Even then, I use less sugar for an entire pot of sauce than I would use for a cup of coffee! Adding meat and/or more vegetables is usually a better fix. |
