California Online Community College - Alpha - 02-20-2022

Some interesting data inside a piece of legislative action
Bill Text - AB-2820 The California Online Community College.

RE: California Online Community College - dfrecore - 02-21-2022

I'm guessing they didn't do a real great job at marketing this. Not to mention that each of the 113 (1) CA CC's has an online presence of some sort, so there was no real need to do this in the first place. What an epic waste of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Wow. It doesn't even come up in a search for "California online community college" and I've lived in CA for years and never heard of it. So, no, it doesn't seem like they're doing much marketing.

This is the first I've heard of Calbright. I don't think it even came up in a search on California's database of online courses (CVC.edu).

"Your tax dollars at work."

Yep, I was a CA resident my entire life until 1.5 years ago, 11+ years on this forum, helped MANY kids with plans for CC including transferring to a 4yr state school, and I had never heard of this except on this forum ONCE!

You can easily go to CVC.edu and take courses at any school. And no, you cannot find that online school as an option. Sheesh!

An unaccredited community college. Who only offers certificates.

https://www.calbright.org/about/accreditation/

Enough money went into this to build something useful. It failed.

This is free training for CA residents to get certs:

Salesforce Administrator Certification
CompTIA A+
Cybersecurity (no specific cert, just training)

In addition to there being a failure in advertisement, they were dealing with a special population - poor single mothers. Online education in a tech field was doomed to have a high failure rate. They probably would have been better off in a hands-on bootcamp.

RE: California Online Community College - studyingfortests - 02-22-2022

The whole thing seems utterly unnecessary. Why could these programs not be rolled into an existing community college with a large online program? It sounds suspiciously like someone's pork project.

They assumed that poor single mothers wanted to get into IT (??) and could do this all online, which is quite a stretch in the first place.  That is the last population that would have access to a computer and the internet; and it's also not a good bet that they can do this all on their own with very little help.

If they were trying to reach out to this population, they'd have been better off offering onsite childcare instead.  And some other programs.

The whole thing has been ridiculous.  Whoever created it is woefully out of touch with reality.

RE: California Online Community College - Edu4change - 03-04-2022

I was a former Administrator at Calbright College (AKA California Online College), sadly my role ended. I saw students who needed accommodations never to secure them, but rather their leadership offered inadequate substitutions. Imagine sending your child with a disability to a public school, where resources should not be an issue, yet due to other personal agendas, your child's educational needs are neglected. I lost sleep over this, and I am sure you would too
Please share this with your fellow educators.

CA is spending millions on a failed community college.
If you can take a moment to write to your local legislators that would mean so much to me
ASSEMBLY BILL NO. 2820
(Find your legislatures ) https:findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov

Please write in for support of that bill to shut Calbright College (California Online Community College) down.

I support AB 2820. In just two years, fewer than 80 students have completed a certificate at Calbright College, California’s exclusively online, unaccredited community college. Currently there are 911 students enrolled. However, of the 911 Calbright’s officials did not disclose how many students are active in their programs nor have they answered why their enrollment period is 6 times the length of all other community colleges. Additionally, in the college’s last Mile Stone report, 43% of students have not completed any substantive activity in more then 90 days, yet they are not dropped.
California has allocated 60 million in one time funding with an additional 15 million of ongoing funding. I support section 75013 education code to redistribute Calbright Colleges funding to the other established accredited community colleges.

75013. (a) On or before January 1, 2024, the following sums of the college’s funding are hereby appropriated for the following purposes: (1) Five million dollars ($5,000,000) for increasing the number of single mothers and students with dependent children enrolling and attending community college by supporting the childcare of these students with dependent children. (2) ____ dollars ($____) for basic needs centers of the California Community Colleges. (3) ____ dollars ($____) for providing student housing for community college students. (4) All remaining funding, or the sum of ____ dollars ($____) for providing state financial aid to community college students. (b) This part shall become inoperative on January 1, 2024, and, as of January 1, 2025, is repealed.
