Computer / Starting Your Pace March 14 - Mr T - 02-05-2022

Thank you to the posters on this forum; having the information was very helpful in both doing the Sophia courses and in the meeting with Jessica.

Will be starting the Your Pace on 3/14, with close to 90 credits transfer (RA/Sophia/other ACE), planning to do the Spanish and Biology/lab at UMPI - with current planned degree is BABA M&L c.   (Should also have a Pierpont C&TC BOG AAS in May as well).

**Am curious what the recommendation is for low-cost windows based laptop and proctor camera for use at UMPI Your Pace?  Am currently using a Chromebook.

Thank you.

Your current computer should do fine. The biggest issue might be saving documents, but I think you can use Google Docs?

Hi, thank you.  I might just start out and see how it goes.  this Chromebook was $87 at Wal-Mart in December, i had planned on a windows pc laptop but at that price i couldn't help not buy it.

I do have Google Docs on it, and I also have a paid annual MS Office suite subscription but am finding a big difference to how the Chromebook works even with those apps, compared to my work Lenovo laptop.

I think those are the 2 classes that people have had the most trouble with (Spanish may have been a professor issue or something, while Bio w/Lab was a lot more involved than Study.com's course).

Yes - have noticed that on the forum. currently just planning to do them at UMPI/YourPace and just get started on UMPI while I have some momentum.

You'll need Microsoft Office which is free from UMPI. I don't know if that works with a Chromebook. You'll need to create PowerPoint presentations in a few classes. You'll need to save the Final Assessments on your computer and upload them into the learning platform. You don't need a video camera.

Can you not just use Google Docs and Google Slides and save them in Word/PowerPoint format?

The formatting may end up messed up. There are classes that require the Final Assessment to be a Microsoft Word document. Some professors are VERY picky about the formatting. Many papers require charts, graphs, and images as well. Not sure how you'd create the graphs and charts in Google Docs and get them to work properly in Word or Excel.

If UMPI provides MS Office, you should be able to use the online version even with a Chromebook. Similar to Google Docs, except actual MS formatting.
