Many credits not sure what to do - Nivondu - 03-09-2021

Hello everyone,
A few years ago this hive mind helped me with my goal of finishing my bachelor's degree through TESU.
Now, my wife would like to get your opinion as well.

She has attended two colleges - the first is a regionally accredited 2 yr college and the second is an online school called Penn Foster.  I think Penn is Nationally accredited but unsure. I'll list them both here separately but we would love to get your ideas on the best way to finish out a bachelor's for her. Would prefer TESU but willing to go elsewhere. Just looking for the shortest path to complete a bachelor's

Thank you all in advance

The shortest path to complete a Bachelor's would probably be through UMPI instead of TESU. But it really depends on what kind of degree your wife is wanting to get. For instance, with all of the B&M science credits she has, she could just about get a Biology degree at TESU. She'd need to find organic chem II somewhere and cell biology (possibly at NMJC?) but I think everything else could be covered via alternate means. Is that what she wants? If not, what does she want?

Penn Foster is nationally accredited but some of their courses do have ACE accreditation. TESU will accept those when on an ACE (Acclaim) transcript.

<gasp!> It's YOU! Mr. BA Music dude from TESU! It's been a short while since I last read a message from you... How's it going? I remember you because you're probably the only person at the time going for a BA Music when everyone was shooting for a BSBA or BALS. Anyways... With the credits above, Excelsior and WGU would be the best options as they both take the NA credits (even if they are NOT ACE recommended for credit). An Excelsior BSLA would be the best option for max transfer...

Honestly, she just needs a bachelor's in something - anything LOL

I'm not familiar with UMPI or NMJC...

Hey hey, yup I actually made it. And no joke it was the support of this group that kept me going. I think I might be one of only a handful of people to complete the BA in Music but I'm sure glad I did.

Yup, since your wife just wants a check the box Bachelors, the Excelsior BSLA will take all 90 or LL credits and she would just need to take 30 UL credits through Coopersmith, Davar, Study.com to finish off the requirements. It may be possible to see if UMPI takes NA credits, but I don't recall they do, otherwise they would be a good option too, just to take 30 residency credits there for cheap. If your wife has tuition assistance/reimbursement, you can take 13 credits at Excelsior and transfer the rest in... On the slightest chance she's going for TESU, they only require 15 UL, you just need to decide...

UMPI does not accept NA credits.

While WGU will take NA credit, you don't have any credits that will work there, so you can't make the most of these.

So, if she just wants any degree, a BSLA at EC is going to be her best bet. She could just needs an English Comp 2 course, an UL Ethics course, and then 4 UL liberal arts courses and 3 UL courses that can be liberal arts or non-liberal arts (so like business).

The cheapest/easiest way to get the UL is Study.com, and their website lists what you can take for each category (for example, you can take BUS 318: Management Ethics to meet the UL requirement and the Ethics requirement, and then BUS 313: Organizational Communication, BUS 324: Managerial Communication, ENGL 305: Advanced Technical Writing, BUS 307: Leadership and Organizational Behavior, PSY 311: Physiological Psychology, or PSY 316: Advanced Social Psychology for your liberal arts courses, and there's a whole bunch she could take in business or computers that will work for non-liberal arts).

Then she enrolls, takes the cornerstone and capstone, and she's done.

I imagine it could be done in 6 months or less (EC's courses are 8 weeks, so that's going to take 4 months right there, but she can easily take her UL courses at the same time).

UMPI changes their credit policy often and they for example don't accept NCCRS but you can ask about it and they sometimes make an exception (as a PLA). Their evaluation is free. It may be worth to just see if you can get a free evaluation. From the RA accredited place it looks like she has just north of 80 credits there.

Her Penn Foster credits will probably not transfer, but hey doesn't hurt to try if it's a free eval.

Then she could finish off her last dozen or so classes at UMPI for around $1400 a term, should probably take her 2-3 terms. Unless she wants a bio degree, go with TESU

RE: Many credits not sure what to do - rachel83az - 03-11-2021

Fought with the ACE site for a bit and it looks like the following Penn Foster classes should be valid for ACE credit:

Computer Applications
Information Literacy
Mathematical Applications

The remaining ones do not appear to be. So, if she does decide to go with TESU or UMPI, that's potentially 7 more credits that she has towards her degree.

Okay been digging around and I have a follow up.

With Excelsior BSLA + Study.com do you think she could take the remainder of her UL on study.com then insta-graduate?
