American overseas - needs undergrad degree - Open to FAFSA Aid - best program(s)? - Prof.Gringo - 02-07-2021
So about the situation:
42 years old, no uni credit except some Sophia courses done for ACE credit.
Open to using FAFSA Student Aid if possible - Also a WA State resident if that
makes any difference. With the changes to uni's like the Big 3, makes me wonder
if one could get Max financial aid - and they would, then LOL so why not?
Obviously don't want to have to do anything in-person in the USA.
One would want to do it all online 100% - so who's the best option then?
As for program major something to do with education perhaps?
I don't think a licensure program would be an option.
But other options?

Which Sophia courses have you completed? And would you be open to completing an undergrad degree in any field, then focusing on something education-related at the graduate level?

If you want education, UMPI has a BALS with an education minor. They've got some other nice degrees, too. For UMPI, you'd take a bunch of classes at Sophia and finish at UMPI for 30 or 40 credits (give or take). They're a lot easier to deal with than Charter Oak, Excelsior, or Thomas Edison.

If I was getting a degree with no prior RA credit, I would probably choose either EC (no RA needed, and you can take 13cr there for $5850), or a cheap school like UMPI. None of the other Competency-based schools has a BA with a concentration, they're all generic.

If you can get max financial aid, TESU isn't a bad option. bjcheung77 has made a few posts explaining how to make the most out of financial aid at TESU. They do have some nice degrees (education is not one of them). But I think that you would still wind up paying more out of pocket than you would at UMPI with financial aid. I could be wrong, though.

Are you active military or family? WGU has teaching and education, but they don't accept students living abroad except, "U.S. active-duty military personnel and their families at overseas installations and individuals living in Guam, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands."

Forgot about the military thing! In addition to WGU being an option for military personnel, TECEPs at TESU count towards the residency requirements but ONLY for veterans and military personnel. TECEPs are also counted as qualifying for veterans' benefits. https://www.tesu.edu/academics/catalog/veterans-and-military-personnel
So there are a lot of options for overseas Americans. It just depends on your personal circumstances.

I don't like to make assumptions about anyone. You needn't be active military to qualify for the military program at TESU. And I've seen some people with veterans' benefits refer to it as "financial aid" before clarifying that they are/were military and want to use those benefits.
