UMPI & Sophia - portia8 - 02-04-2021 Hi Hi, hope everyone is doing well. I'm currently barreling through the Sophia courses as quickly as I can as I intend to apply to UMPI as soon as possible. I was just wondering if anyone knew which degree from UMPI the Sophia courses fulfil the most requirements for. I know its required to do at least 30 credits with them but I would obviously like to be able to finish as swiftly as possible with them so to not incur extra costs so I'm deciding between the Bachelor of Liberal Studies with Minor in Education or their Bachelor of Arts History and Political Science with the focus of History; which one do you think Sophia courses will fulfil the most requirements for? Currently, I have 50 credits with Sophia and the last thing I want to do is have to do Sophia courses that I don't need, especially Algebra I have math Trauma I swear. The ones I've done so far are: Accounting. Ancient Greek Philosophers. Art History I Art History II. Developing Effective Teams. Environmental Science. Human Biology. Intro to Business. Intro to Psychology. Intro to Sociology. Intro to IT. Macroeconomics. Microeconomics. Project Management. The essentials of Managing Conflict. U.S History I. U.S History II. Visual Communications. Any recommendations of where you think this will best apply and advice on what, if any, Sophia courses I shouldn't bother with are greatly appreciated. As always, very big thanks to anyone/everyone who replies. Have a good day!! UMPI & Sophia - rachel83az - 02-04-2021 According to the list provided by ashkir, both Sophia algebra and stats are no good at fulfilling the GEC requirements. But you will still need math, so far as I can tell. You might want to ask if they'll accept CSMLearn and then you'd only need (from what I can see) to take one more math class with them. You're still missing a few possible GEC courses: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/UMPI_Sophia_Transfer_Equivalents RE: UMPI & Sophia - ss20ts - 02-04-2021 As an UMPI student, I would check out the thread ashkir provided because he took every Sophia course and transferred to UMPI. HIs thread shows how UMPI accepted each course. I did not take most of Sophia's courses. I would not take Sophia's English courses because they are FAR MORE work than you will do in an UMPI course. They take significantly longer as well. If Sophia doesn't offer a course that fulfills UMPI's GEC, I wouldn't worry about it. I would take it UMPI. They offer every course you need to complete their degrees. The BLS is going to be easier to complete than the history degree. You get much more of a variety of classes to choose from as well. Here's ashkir's thread: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-UMPI-Sophia-Transfer-Equivalent-List-Objectives?highlight=ashkir At UMPI, you will need a MINIMUM of 30 credits completed at UMPI. You also have to complete a specific number of upper level courses at UMPI. There's no way around this. You also MUST complete the GEC (gen eds). Chances are you'll need more than 30 credits to finish your degree at UMPI, but like i said they offer every course required. I wouldn't hunt around for courses such as CSMLearn and hope it's accepted. I would just take UMPI's math course. Feel free to pm me with any questions you may have about UMPI. I'm happy to help. ETA: You will need an ethics course, you might as well do the one with Sophia since you completed Ancient Greek Philosophers. Sophia's College Algebra DOES fill one of the GEC. Algebra is not the only math course required for the BA in Business Administration which is why ashkir needed an additional math course. Even Introduction to Statistics transfers to UMPI as a math elective. It shows in the link that Foundations to Statistics DOES fulfill the GEC requirement but Introduction to Statistics doesn't. Could that be a typo error? Should it be the other way around? I really want to avoid doing that Foundations in Statistics course!! Intro.. to Statistics was not fun!!! ![]() RE: UMPI & Sophia - ss20ts - 02-04-2021 (02-04-2021, 11:59 AM)Pathfinder Wrote: I was wondering also about the Statistics courses..... Should it be the other way around? ashkir's list shows Introduction to Statistics coming in as MAT101 Statistics. They may have already used his College Algebra which comes in as MAT117 College Algebra. A course can be used to fulfill multiple Learning Objectives in the GEC. Foundations of Stats came in as a MAT1XX Math Elective which means it fulfills a general elective requirement not the GEC. This also depends on which degree you're pursuing. I'm not getting the same degree and these courses work for me. He needed additional math because it's part of that degree's plan where as the BLS doesn't require additional math like the BA in business administration does. Every degree has different requirements. He also had College Algebra which also counts in the GEC. They used my College Algebra course from a college years and years ago. They also gave me credit for Sophia's College Algebra. Seems like RA credit trumps ACE credit which makes a lot of sense. Every degree does not require stats. College Algebra is enough for several degrees. RE: UMPI & Sophia - Ann7 - 02-04-2021 Good to know thanks! I also have a few RA credits but none are math.... although one Is Intro to Astronomy with lab (which was math resolvíng for the lab) but I am hoping that will cover the science with lab GEC requirement. (Like BIO 105 at UMPI that Is needed If only doing Sophia beforehand) I have no idea if that works since they dont have an Astronomy class at UMPI! They do have a class in meteorology so there's hope! That course is only available to on campus students. I transferred in my lab science course from a community college. It's not a geology course they offer, but they gave me credit for it. Sophia's Environmental Science course counts for one of the GEC's, but Human Biology does not. Found that out the hard way! I wouldn't have taken it if I had known in advance. It is a general elective. RE: UMPI & Sophia - ashkir - 02-04-2021 Hey good luck! Their GEC information is a tad confusing for YourPace students as our credits transfer in uniquely and differently and is done manually for each person going into the YourPace program. So your advisor would be able to answer a lot of questions. You can also ask them for their opinions, etc. They're very easy going. |
