Advice needed - rjryowit - 03-18-2008 I need some input from anyone here on the best way to proceed. I have gone back to school (middle age career change) to finish my degree, which I planned to get in mathematics as I want to teach math. Along the way, I have found that just having a math degree does not guarantee competency to teach math in CA (long story). So what I need is a BA in just maybe liberal studies in order to accelerate this process. I combine this degree with the proper competency requirements, and I can enter immediately into a local district internship and start teaching right away while earning my teaching credential.(CSET's and CBEST) Below I list what I have finished and will finish by end of May. I was going to enter a local Cal State Univ in the fall in order to obtain the upper level math courses necessary for the math major, but am rethinking my plan. I was looking to enter into TESC because they accept those FEMA credits, of which I can do up to 27 of them for general ed. Your comments please. Courses completed with units earned at end. Step two: Once you figure out what degree you want, apply and have TESC evaluate your transcripts. Step three: While you're waiting on them to finish your eval, finish up the rest of your FEMA credits. FEMA courses count as Free Electives, so knock out 27 of them and move on. Step four: Once they evaluate your previous credits, look at the credit distribution list and your degree audit to figure out what classes you need to take and/or test out of to get your degree. Step five: Get your test on haha. Hope this helps!!! ![]() FYI: Boredom = Factious :p Advice needed - rjryowit - 03-20-2008 Cinderly, Thanks for your reply. I have spoken to my local county office of education and am in contact with them. They are interested in me and when I will have my degree. Math teachers are sorely needed here. After my initial post, I have decided to finish the degree as a BA in Math at TESC. What I will have to do though is spend one semester at local Cal State Univ and take 18 units of upper level math, so to meet outstanding requirements for tesc. The CA district internship requires you to have the following "Golden Tickets" as I call them: 1) have a degree, (preferably one in area you want to teach) 2) pass the CBEST, (which I have done) To be highly qualified for math, CA has these single subject tests that determine this. 3)pass the 3 CSET exams which guarantee competency for math. I have passed 1, taken and waiting results on the 2nd one, and then in 60 days take the third one. The district will then emergency credential me if I can land a job. Then over the next two years I have to complete those courses they would have had me do at a normal university. They require me to attend their night school of classes to complete this. I do have the inside skinny with the local city school district superientendent and local high school super as they are long time customers of my business that I presently have. They both told me to come see them as soon as my degree is completed. Sometimes I need to just post my thoughts and it all becomes clearer. Thank you both for the input. |
