COSC no longer accepts Coopersmith and others - CatsDomino - 01-23-2020

Hi, all.  I'm fairly new to the site, but have been reading and learning all I can.  I've settled on COSC and will begin in March with a goal of finishing my BALS in December.  In the spirit of helping others like you folks have helped me, I wanted to share this little gem I came across while searching through the newest catalog at COSC:

Charter Oak State College determines the amount of credit and the level of credit accepted in transfer based on policies established by its faculty. Charter Oak State College reserves the right to limit or exclude the transfer of credit if the course content, assessment process , or student learning outcomes do not meet Charter Oak’s faculty standards. Given these standards, effective January 16, 2020, credit will no longer be accepted in transfer from the following organizations:
  • Consortium for International Studies (CIS)

  • Coopersmith

  • Rechtschaffen Institute of Judaic Studies (RIJS)

  • Tor Academy

I'm not sure if this will effect those who have already applied and sent Coopersmith credit (or any of the other providers listed) for evaluation at COSC.  Hopefully it won't if the credit was evaluated and accepted before January 16.

My gosh, that's interesting, there is NO mention of Shmoop on that list! I mean, I would have guessed that provider would be on par, if not worse than Coopersmith and Tor Academy. There's also no mention of Davar Academy. I wonder if they are going to be creating an "approved provider list" like what TESU has done. If so, I highly think they're going to go the way of TESU, I am guessing more surprises are on the way.

This is what I'm afraid of as well.  The "approved provider list" coupled with the $2800 residency waiver fee are exactly why I didn't choose TESU in the first place.  I really hope COSC will strive to keep costs down for students who are paying out of pocket instead of following TESU's lead.  I consider myself rather fortunate to have tons of traditionally earned credit, and to only need five upper level classes (Study.com here I come!), cornerstone, and capstone to complete the BALS.

Yikes. All the more reason to complete your degree as fast as possible.

I thought they stopped accepting Shmoop a while ago?

Aren't TOR and DAVAR the same thing? I seem to recall there was just a name change.

Well that's what you keep get when people keep posting to the forum "oh just learn a PowerPoint and you'll pass for sure!" if I were at Charter Oak and was on the forum reading that, I would do the same.

You think people would learn over the years what you can and can't say on a forum. Seriously.

Yep.  This is exactly why I am try to cram as much work as I can with my remaining electives for TESU, as you never know when more stupid crap will be enacted.  Thankfully, my UL’s are done.
