Shmoop Temporary Extension to Aug. 31, 2019 - eriehiker - 06-25-2019

I have been taking the Shoop finite math course intermittently and noticed it expires on 6/30.  I emailed Shmoop and they responded that the expiring courses have been extended to Aug. 31.

RE: Shmoop Temporary Extension to Aug. 31, 2019 - eriehiker - 08-08-2019

I have to say that I am just a touch nervous about this. I currently have a 74% in finite math with only the "Math of Finance" unit and the final to finish. I feel pretty good about passing. However, I am hoping that I don't get caught in some weird recommendation vortex.

I would wait to finish until it shows up on ACE with the new date; otherwise, you can't add it to your transcript.

Do you happen to know if Shmoop generally renews courses? I’m trying to decide how much pressure I need to put on my teenager to complete some of those literature courses.

Okay, so when I emailed in June, this is the email I received back:

"Shmoop Enterprise Support (Shmoop)

Jun 25, 11:46 AM PDT

Hi Mike,

Thanks for reaching out! We're in constant communication with ACE to ensure our courses are resubmitted for review before they expire. While we're waiting to hear back on the status of the ones we've just recently submitted for renewal, their expiration date (for those handful of courses that were set to expire on 6/30/19 and 5/31/19) has been extended until August 31, 2019 while ACE performs their evaluation for renewal. That means that all coursework completed before August 31 will definitely be valid for ACE Credit.

Best,
Team Shmoop"

So, Shmoop seems pretty sure of itself. It makes me kind of laugh. Of all the providers, it seems that Shmoop is the one that should generate the most worry in a student, but they always seem so confident. They really do have some nice upper level English and topics that no one else has. I have noticed that they seem to adding units to several classes to reach 12 units per class rather than five, six, seven or eight. Maybe this is a part of the review process.

I generally think that college via alternative credit is three-dimensional. People think about cost and want cheap classes. People think about effort and want easy classes. The third dimension is opportunity. Sometimes a class pops up at an unbelievable price and people should just go out there and grab it. Sometimes a class appears for a while and then goes away. Sometimes classes that once existed and no longer exist can be paired later with classes that come into existence to create a degree or certificate opportunity. So I think that it is best to be a barnacle and just keep filtering all the good stuff that comes along because it can all eventually come together into something amazing.

None of their English courses are ACE-recommended for UL that I've ever seen (although TESU used to count some as UL, but that's an entirely different story).

I just recently checked all of their courses, was trying to find some ultra inexpensive UL. Only the below was UL, which is already expired.

Geometry
SHMO 0011 UL 3
Geometry for Teachers or Math for Teachers exp 6/30/19

Good call. Yes, it’s two.
