Do the Big Three Accept Credits from DEAC Sources? - retro - 04-25-2019
I know the Big Three generally focus on ACE/NCCRS transfer credits. In looking for non-traditional sources of college credit online I sometimes see sources that are Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC) accredited only.
As a rule of thumb do the Big Three accept DEAC credits?

There's a difference between credit recommendations and accreditation. ACE and NCCRS are organizations that evaluate non-college courses, exams, and certifications. If they appear to be college-level, then they will receive a recommendation.
DEAC is an institutional accrediting body recognized by the government. They accredit colleges. There are two types of institutional accreditation: regional and national. DEAC is national accreditation. TESU, like many regionally accredited colleges, does not accept credits from nationally accredited colleges. I don't believe COSC does either. They made an exception for ITT Tech when it closed because their students were left stranded. Excelsior might accept some credits from nationally accredited schools.
While national accreditors may not have standards that are as high as regional accreditors, they're certainly similar or higher than ACE and NCCRS' standards. I think it's kind of silly that many schools will accept a lot of the junk courses approved by ACE, but they won't accept credits from a school accredited by an organization recognized by USDOE and CHEA.

DEAC is a form of national accreditation. Excelsior will accept some specific NA credits, but technically the Big 3 only accept credit transfers from RA schools.
They also accept most ACE/NCCRS credit recommendations, but not all.

What do you mean "they also accept most ACE/NCCRS credit recommendations, but not all?" Is that a mapping of specific tests to specific courses in their catalog or do you mean something different?

It means in general, if the course is recommended by ACE or NCCRS and it fits into the degree plan, the Big 3 will accept it for credit. There are some rare exceptions (such as Shmoop courses not being accepted by TESU or some "foundational" courses not being taken), but in general they are accepted.

Not sure if this helps since it's not one of the Big 3 but just for info sake WGU does accept NA credits, gave me more than anywhere else for my garbage NA AAS degree.

I considered mentioning that, but it sounded like the OP was looking for places to take courses to fit into a degree at one of the big 3, so it didn't seem relevant.
If someone is considering a degree from WGU, I'd recommend looking into other credit options (like Study.com or Straighterline) rather than pursuing NA courses for credit. Of course, if they already have NA credits then, by all means, try to use them towards a degree from WGU.

Nope.
But sometimes DEAC credits have something "extra" that would get them accepted - like evaluation or accreditation, but as a rule, DEAC alone = no.

I wasn't aware that the USDOE has separate standards for different accreditors. The reason I wasn't aware is that they don't. National accreditation has lesser acceptance but a lot of that is snobbery.
Excelsior is quite generous with nationally accredited school transfers, more so if the school is accredited under the USDOE umbrella rather than under CHEA alone.
