TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - nyvrem - 02-19-2019 Just wondering, cost and duration of program aside, if you were going to pick a CS program base on it's curriculum and school's reputation - Which Computer Science program would you pick? Links below for each program. TESU - BA in CS (is less math heavy, 39 hours of CS major) https://www.tesu.edu/heavin/ba/computer-science FHSU - BS in CS (Seems to have more major hours in CS (65 hours) https://www.fhsu.edu/cs/Academic-Programs/bs-computer-science CMU - BA or BS in CS (difference between BA and BS is 8 hours of language vs 8 hours of analytics, only 40 major hours, with no Calculus requirements) https://www.centralmethodist.edu/academics/catalog/cges-catalog/majors-courses/computer-science-degree.php RE: TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - Merlin - 02-19-2019 (02-19-2019, 05:27 AM)nyvrem Wrote: Just wondering, cost and duration of program aside, if you were going to pick a CS program base on it's curriculum and school's reputation - I see all those as pretty much equivalent in that none of those schools, nor CS programs, particularly stand out. They are all run of the mill RA colleges. As far as I know, none of them have gained ABET accreditation for their CS program. Not that ABET accreditation is required, it is a nice to have though. Out of curiosity, did you intend to exclude the WGU CS program? I'd put that in the same academic ballpark as these. You could probably complete the degree quicker with a lower price point to boot. I have heard that WGU will be seeking ABET accreditation for their CS program once they have graduated enough students through their existing program to meet the criteria for assessment. RE: TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - armstrongsubero - 02-19-2019 I would pick the FSHU program as first choice and the TESU program as second. I will not pick the CMU degree without calc as a CS degree without calculus is a vanity degree and the courses look more like IT or computer technology than CS. If you're a manager or have years of experience in a specialized or just want a tick the box degree then by all mean do whichever is easiset for you. However if you want to learn CS or arent sure of your career path then the FSHU program or even WGU loke someone mentioned is a much better choice. RE: TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - Ideas - 02-19-2019 FHSU out of those three, but I would pick WGU if you want to go faster and save money. RE: TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - davewill - 02-19-2019 Honestly, I'd pick my local public college if we're simply talking reputation. If they're any good at all, they'll be better known by local employers than any of these online programs. Among the ones listed, I don't really think it matters much, although I do agree with @armstrongsubero that you should do the calculus track unless you're simply so math averse that avoiding it is a number one priority. Of course, if that's so, I'd wonder if engineering is really what you want to do for a career anyway. RE: TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - sanantone - 02-19-2019 If you're worried about reputation, then WGU would be dead last. I can see why it's not on the list. RE: TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - nyvrem - 02-19-2019 can't do WGU cause i'm overseas. Else i would have considered them too RE: TESU vs CMU vs FHSU for Computer Science ? - sanantone - 02-19-2019 (02-19-2019, 04:55 PM)nyvrem Wrote: can't do WGU cause i'm overseas. If it were an option for you, I'd put it last on a list based on reputation. As a widely-advertised online school with no grades, it can't compete with public universities on reputation. But, the curriculum is better than CMU's. If you're focused on software/application/web development and only want the CS degree for that purpose (for which I'd argue that maybe a software development degree may be more appropriate) there isn't a lot of call for higher math in real life work, except in niche fields. Most of the best programmers I've known are self-trained and never needed to learn math higher than algebra to excel at their job. Yes, people working in graphics or physics or other fields that are highly math-focused will need higher levels of math, but those fields will attract engineers who are math focused. The school itself has no worse reputation than most small schools. The only reason why the state schools might be looked upon better is because they say "state" in them, but unless you're looking at a rated school, I don't really see a lot of difference between any of these schools. At least in this area, if you don't have a degree from an ivy or an elite ranked college on your resume, every other college is the same for hiring purposes. Unless your degree is from a school with a poor reputation, like the University of Phoenix or some of the other well-known private for-profit schools with poor press. But given the OP is not from the US, it doesn't much matter. |
