Second Masters after MBA? - ThatBankDude - 11-22-2018 I know that WGU is very big here based on my readings however I am interested in a second masters from a brick and mortar that offers some online programs. I finish my MBA with a concentration in Management in August 2019 from an AACSB-Accredited institution. I am curious, what other masters would be nicely coupled with a MBA? I work in banking and have the opportunity to become a Vice President in April 2019 with the institution I work. I saw that the University of Oklahoma has a Masters of Art in Administrative Leadership which is online and may be a good addition to my education. I feel the knowledge can be used in just about any industry. Also look at Waldorf University for their MA in Organizational Leadership. You may be able to transfer half of your MBA courses into the degree. I have only had a couple of accounting courses, which I got A’s in, but I do not believe I have a good enough grasp of accounting to move into that specialization. My main area of interests is in how organizations operate more so on the human side of things. Honestly, I would find an MA in Organizational Leadership pretty interesting. Similar in focus, self-paced, and much less expensive. It's also a business degree which means you should have a fair amount of overlap between your existing MBA coursework and the MSML which would allow you to use what you learned in the MBA to work through the course content faster. RE: Second Masters after MBA? - Ideas - 11-23-2018 One option would be getting a graduate certificate from a decent school, rather than a whole Masters. Harvard Extension School has a lot of business grad certs which are reasonable in time commitment and price, considering. https://www.extension.harvard.edu/academics/graduate-certificates RE: Second Masters after MBA? - sanantone - 11-23-2018 Since you already have a master's degree and another one won't do anything to boost your resume unless it comes from a prestigious school, my opinion is that you should take leadership courses that are free or low-cost. There are many MOOCs and non-credit, certificate programs. Before selecting another degree, if you believe you're going to have an opportunity to become a VP at your bank, when is it specifically you feel deficient in? What do you want to learn and / or what do you think you NEED to secure that promotion? In my opinion, having a strong professional development course or participation in professional organizations / civic organizations may bring you a better ROI than another degree. I mean do you think you need to learn leadership now before you promote or do you already see yourself as a strong leader? If you're still in the learning phase, this might not be the right time for such an important promotion- otoh, if you are already in a position of leadership you probably could teach the class you're about to $ign up for. RE: Second Masters after MBA? - dfrecore - 11-23-2018 I'm not sure why a 2nd MA would be what you want. I don't think leadership be taught well in a program like you'd want - I think a lot of it comes from experience - seeing what does and doesn't work for you, as well as seeing what does or doesn't work well in your own leaders. You have to develop a style that is all yours, and that can't come from a book. I think a MS in Finance would probably be more helpful than accounting or leadership. If you were to get anything, which I doubt is necessary. I like this idea and it is funny because I have been looking at doing the Leadership And Management Certificate with The Wharton School at UPenn. It is $3,600 but I think it would be a good addition to my resume. I am currently in a leadership role with my institution and I do feel I am a very strong leader. At just 26 years old, I am the youngest person in a “position of power” at our bank. I like what someone mentioned above and I may do a graduate certificate with Wharton at UPenn. I love children as I have two myself), anyway... you have several options, too many to think of (like laddering them all), but you should focus on three main ones. 1) Get a graduate certificate in what you want to "specialize in", such as Accounting, Finance, whatever it maybe. 2) Get a Masters in that specialization of choice, this will take slightly longer, but you may be able to transfer those MBA credits over if it's in a similar subject. 3) Go for a Ph.D. instead, it's the final frontier of academic education - be like the captain you are and go the distance. And finally, if you're still a science addict, you may even want to continue onto a Masters in Biology or something interesting. Education is lifelong learning, I wouldn't rush it just for the sake of getting a promotion. |
