Associate's/Certificate Suggestions - masrat858 - 04-27-2018

I'm planning on earning a General Management BSBA from TESU once I've graduated from CUNY next year with a Biology BS degree, but in the meanwhile, could anyone please recommend any Associate's or certificates I could possibly get from either TESU, Excelsior, or Charter Oak solely via alternative credits?

From TESU, I believe you could get the Associate of Arts degree, or many of the business-related certificates like Accounting, Marketing, Operations Management, General Management, probably Finance and HR, and maybe others.

Could they all be earned through alternative credits, and not taking any courses at TESU?

RE: Associate's/Certificate Suggestions - Yenisei - 04-27-2018

If you're doing a BSBA in General Management, you could get the necessary credits for the Accounting and CIS certificates from alternative credit sources. I would, however, question why you'd do that instead of doing an MBA.

Yes, although you would have to be enrolled in a degree at TESU to graduate with a certificate. Otherwise they require you take half the credits at TESU.

TESU requires that half of their certificates be earned through them, so that's not a great plan.

Also, their AA is more expensive than I would pay for ($2100 in fees without even counting the cost of applying or taking any courses).

May we ask why you want to get an AA when you are already in the process of getting one?  It doesn't make a lot of sense.

The other thing you might want to consider is the Pierpont BOG AAS degree.  You can transfer all of your credits there and get a degree for free, if you have at least 12cr from a Regionally Accredited school.

But again, why would you want this when you're already close to finishing an AA on your own?

the OP could work on the alternative credit options now (the certificates tell you what you need) and then get the certificates when getting the BSBA in order to avoid having to take TESU courses just to satisfy the certificate requirements.

The BOG AAS degree is for people who aren't enrolled in school now.

You only need to do half the certificate with TESU courses if you are not enrolled in a TESU degree.

Oh, that’s a bummer; I was going to look more into BOG AAS.

Is there anything I could work towards at all while I finish up my current degree with CUNY, to fill in some of my free time?

Three things...

 - First keep in mind that in order to get the BSBA from TESU you will need 24 new credits; all that will need to be earned after your first degree is completed. So don't start anything new or extra for credit that you do not need for your BS in Biology - as they will not count towards the BSBA.

- Secondly, as asked by Yenisei, why is it your plan to go to TESU for a BSBA after you have completed a BS in another area?  If it is because you would like to have a Business degree, then you would be wiser to look into and MBA through WGU (as I assume the BSBA plan is low cost related).  They do not require you to have an undergraduate degree in business, so that would not be a hindrance for you and the cost could be equal to the BSBA - you would get far more 'bang for your buck' with an MBA that the BSBA (when you'll already have a BS in Biology).  Also WGU offers a few options in the MBA concentrations; the standard Business Administration path, along with an MBA Information Technology Management or MBA Healthcare Management (which may be of interest to you since you're a Biology major).  Use your free time to learn on your own the subjects that are covered in the MBA degree, give yourself a head start to work through the self-paced courses. There are so many free (i.e. MOOCS) or low cost options available for business lessons, even a low cost Study.com would cover many (and you don't need the credits, you need the knowledge)

- Lastly, if you're just hoping to get a degree (Associates) to get something concrete on your resume 'right now' and before you complete you BS in Biology, then the BOG AAS makes the most sense - you likely already have all that you need for it (being you only have a year left in your BS)
