What's the impact of TESU downgrading Study.com? - Thorne - 01-05-2018

Unless TESU decided against it, they were supposed to downgrade some Study.com courses as of 1/1/2018.

Has anyone found out if this is still true? If it is true, has anyone figured out what the new plan will look like (and is willing to share)?

It's happened and Study.com has already updated their transfer equivalency charts on their site: https://study.com/directory/school/Thomas_Edison_State_University.html#transferTab

Some of their newer courses still aren't reflecting on there though

Thorne, what exactly are you looking? If it's the BSBA, the current plan dfrecore has would work just fine. For the BALS, you can decide on which concentration to do or if you're looking for no concentration, use 5 UL Shmoop courses and you're done.

Thorne, if you're going for a BSBA, you're not affected by much as there are other UL from Study.com, the ones they've dropped, some of them even have a corresponding UL for it, dfrecore mentioned it in one of her threads.

Anyways, it will only affect you if you wanted to take some Biology courses, as both of those were dropped to a lower level, all the Psychology classes were dropped to a lower level and one of the History course dropped too, see the transfer tab JSD linked.

Do we know if this is only effecting Study.com? Or are they re-aligning evaluations for ALL course providers to ACE's recs?

In December, I inquired about the transfer equivalency for a Shmoop course and was told that if it is LL on ACE then we will only award LL credit.

I don't recall if TESU mentioned anything else was going away of for other providers, so far only Study.com has been mentioned on the forums. I hope nothing changes for the majority of members here, but if ACE is evaluating those courses as LL/UL, I think TESU should do the same.

We're going to lose a ton of UL options if that's the case. Most ACE reviews come up as LL.

It makes sense why TESU would do this, and I agree it's the right way to go about it. And in the long run it will take a lot of guess work out of transfer equivalencies. But it's time to start updating all of our spreadsheets!

I wonder how they'll handle situations where a course is reviewed by both ACE and NCCRS, and ACE says LL and NCCRS says UL.

I believe someone on the board asked this to Advising and was told the higher recommendation would be applied, anyone else remember that? But of course, there is always the disclaimer that equivalency is subject to assessment.

If they downgrade any other providers, it will really affect:
Shmoop and the ability to get an inexpensive English degree (none of the Lit courses are currently ACE-recommended as UL)
Saylor and the ability to get UL CIS courses (none of those are considered UL)
SL & Saylor Microbiology course & lab
SL Cost Accounting, Business Comm, Org Behavior, Business Ethics - should all be LL

The rest of the providers actually have UL ACE or NCCRS recommendations for their courses (Coopersmith, Davar, etc.) or else they are universities with UL recommendation (like CSU-Global, TECEP's and UExcels). So no worries with those.

For those who are looking into this as well, dfrecore's thread is here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/showthread.php?tid=28270
