Hi everyone,
I'm a brand new user on this forum and I've read a lot of useful information already. I've been thinking about taking online classes at TESU and obtaining a BS degree in Homeland Security. A few years ago I received my Associates in Criminal Justice from Brookdale community college and I'm going to transfer those credits over to TESU.
I would like to know if anyone has any tips for me in obtaining this degree. Can I get most of my credits for this degree from other cheaper sources?
What websites or credit sources should I use and is it mediatory for me to take most of my class with TESU?
Does anyone have any tips or tricks or a degree plan for completing this program?

This is a degree plan that cannot be tested out of completely, and some of the courses are more expensive than the usual providers we usually use here.
But because you're starting with an AA in CJ, you may have some courses already that can be used, which would cut down on costs. If you put your credits here, I can help you with a degree plan. You need to say whether it's a semester-based or quarter-based school, the course #, course name, number of credits, and grades if any are below a C.

You might also want to apply to Excelsior as they offer a similar degree as well. Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Management degree with several concentrations to choose from. The cost for either the TESU/Excelsior would be about the same as the HS/EM courses are the harder ones to find and slightly differ, the general eds are practically the same.

The program has 4 parts: Gen Ed, Electives, AOS, and AOS Electives.
Gen Ed and Electives are discussed on this site and the wiki, so they shouldn't be an issue.
AOS
- courses 1-4 - I have taken similar titled courses at my local CC, but when I transferred them in, they were HLS-199. I didn't bother appealing because I was working on the BSBA:CIS, but they might not have worked anyway because they would have been LL and not UL. Propero has a Homeland Security course. CSU-Global had some Homeland Security and Emergency Management CBEs but some or all of them were missing from the most recent catalog. The courses may still be there. Expensive option, but might be less then TESU courses.
- Research Methods - maybe Study.com or UExcel? Watch LL vs. UL
- Capstone - must be taken at TESU
AOS Electives (doing this from memory)
White Collar Crime (AOJ-303) - PF, CSU-Global
Victimology and Criminal Behavior (AOJ-381) - Propero, CSU-Global
Management Information Systems (CIS-301) - DSST, others

Gangs (SOC-384) - I saw this somewere recently, maybe CSU-Global, Propero. Not sure.

I would apply to both Excelsior College and TESU. I have a deep work background with tons of certifications and government courses in this area. TESU said I would need to do 27 credits with them and Excelsior College said only 4 credits. I took the path of least resistance.

The bachelor's program includes 18 core credits (some can be CC cheaper courses), a 3-credit capstone course, and the 9-credit emphasis area (I did Agency Management and you can use exams for this.)

Yes, I would tend to agree with "different" not as common degrees, Excelsior/WGU and COSC sometimes trump TESU in those regards. As I mentioned in post #3, try Excelsior as well, I think their program is equivalent to courses or even a few courses easier. I haven't taken a look at the two programs in greater details, but I would highly recommend applying to it as well.

I will look into Excelsior college as well thanks for the suggestion! Is excelsior a cheaper school then TESU? Additionally I live in NJ and whichever is the cheapest/easiest route is the route I will take. Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate it.

If you live in NJ, I would think TESU will be cheaper (Excelsior College is in NY). It also depends on how many credits you need from both vs testing out etc. In this area I think EC will be faster.
My third choice was Arizona State Universty (ASU) if I was forced to take 30 resident credits.
ASU has an online BAS in EM, and a name most know, and a football team. If you are military the Univ. of Alaska (UAF) BS degree is also worth looking into as they understand military students.
